Beginning book af new series. An exiting blend of futuristic science fiction and fantasy. I hope this book becomes a movie. I can wait for the rest of the series.

This is Ringo at his best. Briliantly imaginative with stuff right out of left field- but believable. The fighting is brutal, furious, and heroic. (Bad guys are REALLY bad guys, and good guys are comfortably good guys.) I kept waiting for the Dragons, but this is really a book about the enduring nature of Humanity- sort of. (A sexy elf with a bow is an important character, as are The Changed.) How do high-tech people survive when the "tech" dissapears? Ringo's got a grip. Really good stuff. I have ordered the rest of the series already from PBS.

A fascinating sci fi/fantasy tale that has great characters. I could hardly put it down.

Terrific premise (world order maintained by mysterious cyborgs, human nature redeemed by historicists) and masterful construction (many characters and plotlines in play but not overly episodic). But it still left me cold. Maybe because there's no one particularly likeable in this cast of characters.

In the future there is no want, no war, no disease nor ill-timed death. Bodies are shaped like clay into whimisical fantasies of mer-people, dwarves, and dragons. To wish is to have. The world is a paradise and humans are gods.
And then it ends. the council that controls the Net falls out and goes to war. Everywhere people who have never known a moment of want or pain are left wondering how to survive. However, scattered across the face of the earth there are a few communities for whom the Fall is survivable. In the village of Raven's Mill, Edmund Talbot, master smith and unassuming historian, finds that all the problems of the world are falling in his lap. All this while his former lover and their only daughter struggle through the Fallen landscape and enemies new and old gather like jackals around a wounded lion. But what the jackals don't know is that while old he may be, this lion is far from death. And hidden in the past is a mystery that has waited until this time to be revealed.
You cross Edmund Talbot at your paril, for a smith is not all he once was. . .
