The second book of the Outlander series, this one was tough to get into and very misleading in the beginning. I was sucked in after a few chapters though, and had a tough time thinking about anything else until I finished it.

This is the second book in the 'Outlander' series. I enjoyed it even more than the first. It starts out 20 years after Claire returns to her own time, when her husband passes away she takes her daughter back to Scotland and tells her the full story. The book also returns back to the time when Claire was with Jamie, and explains how it is that she came to return to her own time, carrying his child. I had an extremely hard time putting it down, and I cannot wait to read the next in the series!

I've read the entire series by Diana Gabaldon to date. Bought some of the books and reposted them on paperback swap and have two or three on Nook. Having loved it so much decided I wanted the series in my bookcase and am waiting for a couple more to arrive at this point. The series took me a year to read but it's wonderful! It's not *trashy* type romantic fiction. That being said, in the earlier books there are few descriptive love scenes when Jaime and Claire were a young married couple. But hey, they're young, in love and married after all! As the series progresses and the couple ages there's less and less of that. The author's writing style changes slightly in the second half of the series maybe as a result of her becoming more mature. There is a bit of taking the Lord's name in vain here and there by Jamie and Claire which may have been common for that time but don't know. It could have been left out or maybe the word damn used instead. It's fiction after all and I wasn't saying it myself so chose to continue and am glad I did. If you are a prude and religious, maybe forgo the books. Or, read the first couple and decide for yourself. All in all a very enjoyable Sottish fiction series including love, war, time travel. You will become lost in it.
PS - The "Into the Wilderness" series by Sara Donati is very, very, good and highly recommended! It's in my bookcase as well.

An incredible series (started with "Outlander"), the author weaves a tale of past and present, love and loss with such creativity and wisdom that you absolutely picture yourself amongst the characters. Sweeping romance scenes that truly move you to want to hop on a plane to Scotland ... big book, but the pages seem to fly by.

This is book two of a six (so far book series). Great story. Not a story with back and forth time travel every chapter.

I've read the first 3 books in this series. Books 1 and 3 are fabulous, this one is too dark and dreary. It drags on.

The troubles continue for Jamie and Claire. This book starts out in the 1960's, the Claire tells her daughter about her adventures. Naturally, her daughter is a little upset. So we have to the story up to when Claire goes back-talk about having some explaining to do. As with all Outlander books, this is a long one, so set aside plenty of time to read.

Note: Comments on the audiobook narrated by Davina Porter are at the end of this review.

I wasn't as impressed with Dragonfly in Amber as I was with Outlander. Though I enjoyed it, I did have a few issues with it.

The political intrigue was too much. It was well researched, I appreciate Gabaldon's ability to put her characters into a more-or-less historically accurate conflict and I did enjoy the overarching story, but the time in France dragged. Once the story moved on into Scotland, it picked up quite a bit and I didn't want to put it down, but until then I wasn't driven to be reading it all the time.

The viewpoints changed quite a bit during the story, which was both distracting and disorienting. In 1968 we have Claire's first-person narration and a third-person narration centered on Roger that allows us to get inside his head a bit and get a perspective of Claire outside of her head. In the 1700s it is primary Claire's first-person narration with some odd third-person narrations. Including a third-person narration in which 'he [Jamie] is thinking about his wife [Claire],' a scene where I had to rewind to see who he and his wife were.

I'll definitely continue with the series, I hear Voyager is better than Dragonfly in Amber, so we'll see. :)

Another excellent performance by Davina Porter. She has great talent for accents and voices, which bring each character alive. The only oddity was her Brianna's American accent.

The only problem with this audiobook was in the shifting perspectives; it was difficult at times to grasp who was speaking or who's point of view the story was in.
