From Library Journal
Whitaker is the founder of the Wellness Institute in Newport Beach, California, and the publisher of two health newsletters. His new book prescribes a blueprint for living based on sound health principles, with some elements of alternative therapies (e.g., chelation therapy) thrown in. He is not alone in favoring a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet, vitamin and mineral supplementation, regular exercise, relaxation techniques, the use of herbs, and a reduction in the use of drugs. But Whitaker presents this program in a straightforward, easy-to-understand style and includes an extensive bibliography in the first two parts of his book. In Part 3 he takes common health conditions and gives the "Whitaker Prescription" for them, which usually incorporates the techniques he advocates, along with specific nutritional suggestions. Similar information and advice can be found in Michael Murray's Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (LJ 5/1/91) and Andrew Weil's Natural Health Natural Medicine (LJ 5/1/90). However, in view of consumer demand for health-related books that emphasize lifestyle, this guide is recommended to public libraries for its practicality and clarity.
