This is my first Louis L'Amour book. To my surprised I really enjoyed it. It was a book that I was able to finish in one sitting which isn't a bad thing and considering I am normally not a fan of books with a lot of children parts I like the main character. Who is a boy looking after a younger girl attempting to survive long enough for his father to find them. The two encounter a couple of vilians as well as a bear. I really loved that the young boys horse played a major role in big situtations. Overall a 4.5 star book :)

Hard bitten western with just that touch of heart which is typically L'Amour.

The open prairie is a hard place for a seven-year-old boy on his own. Food is scarce, and Indians, outlaws, and wild animals are a constant threat. But young Hardy Collins has no choice. After Indian raiders massacre his wagon train party, there's no one left but three-year-old Betty Sue, who worships him and shadows his every move. Now, with only a knife, a horse, and the survival lessons his father taught him, Hardy must become a man sooner than he ever dreamed possible-or he and Betty Sue will never live to reach California.
