From the cover: Evil -- Kit feels its strange, penetrating chill the moment she sees the ominous mansion looming above her. Soon she finds herself a prisoner in the dark halls of Blackwood, a new, exclusive boarding school for a select group of girls. Left there by her honeymooning mother and new father, Kit finds she is one of only four students -- who unknowingly share one terrifying quality.

Suspenseful and thought-provoking. Author Lois Duncan is queen of the YA suspense genre.

Being a book for YA I thought it was passible, however, I would wait until the YA is about 13 as the content is on a more mature level and might be easier to understand at that age.

I screen books for a YA relative and this one I would hold until the age of 13+

Reading it as an adult I thought it was just okay, it isn't 'scary' or much of a 'thriller' in the sense that an adult would give it a high rating if it was a nail biter but for the YA it would probably be alright

A very interesting book, indeed! A very good read, but was pretty short! I finished it in about two hours, but what a good two hours those were!

5 stars all the way.
This book was just great. I could not put it down! It has everything, suspense, the scare factor but no gore, no blood, no profanity. Its a YA book, but any adult would love it. The author also wrote, "I Know what you did last summer". I didn't even know that, till I got the book. Lois Duncan is an excellent writer, she has now become one of my favs and I have ordered others books by her, I don't want to miss any now! The ending and the purpose behind the book isn't revealed till much later and was a complete surprise. LOVED IT!

From back cover: The terror is real only in her dreams.
Kit knows that evil waits for her in the dark halls of Blackwood School for Girls. But she doesn't know it has already entered her life. And who will believe her if her fears are real only when she sleeps.

This is supposed to be a young adult suspense novel, but my personal feelings are that the young adult reader would have to be very brave! DOWN A DARK HALL is a true tale of terror, for all that several of the main characters are teen-agers.

Granted, there is the obligatory dark and menacing castle (in this case a large mansion where fearsome events have taken place repeatedly over the years.) There are happenings in the night which mystify (and terrify.) There is the traditional unexplained malaise which befalls young women...
But Lois Duncan arranges all these stock elements into a marvelously woven tapestry that grips the reader and carries him off into the book's world. Excellent read!
