Dollycas's Thoughts

The Coffee & Cream Café is doing well with Danika Delany serving up a variety of sweet treats but the big news in Watchogue is the death of Maxwell Crumbholtz, a local billionaire. He intends to make his sons fight for their inheritance. He devised a treasure hunt and opened it to the public. Dani and her friends have decided to take the plunge and join the masses by entering the contest. They will all have to work together to decipher the clues and follow where they lead. Winning four billion dollars would be great for everyone.

The hunt barely gets underway when Team Underdog digs up a body instead of the next clue and her new relationship with "Detective Delicious" may end before it really gets started when a witness asserts Dani was there when the murder took place. Now she has to find the killer to clear her name, but she intends to continue the hunt for the treasure too.

_____

Ms. Gregory has created such a strong group of core characters for this series. They are unique and engaging with smart dialogues. The situations they find themselves in run the gambit of fun everyday life to desperate times when they need to pull together. The characters continue to grow with each new book and throughout each story. I love Dani's mother's family dinners. Relatives seem to come out of the woodwork to attend and hilarity comes to the party as well. I admire that they do it more often than I ever could. Lining up family schedules is not easy.

With the treasure hunt, several new characters are introduced. An elderly couple, a gamer/YouTube star and his friends, a professional treasure hunter and his assistant, some TikTokers, and the Crumbholtz brothers. A well-crafted diverse group that was easy to keep straight, especially with them all being suspects.

The mystery was very well-plotted and with a large number of suspects it wasn't difficult to employ quite a few red herrings.  At one point or another, I thought every one of the suspects could be the killer. I was totally surprised until everything played out in front of my eyes at a sensational showdown. Something truly unexpected made my jaw drop.

Double Scoop of Murder is a fantastically well-written cozy mystery with wonderful characters and a fun theme. I highly recommend the entire series to cozy readers who love mysteries filled with family, friends, and ICE CREAM!! Scoop up your copy of Double Scoop of Murder today.
