Did Pocahontas actually save John Smith's life? Probably not. In a fresh and startling look at Pocahontas, Jean Fritz shows how lifely it was that she was just playing the traditional role of sponsor in his adoption into her father's tribe. In any cse, from tht moment Pocahontas had two worlds: the happy world of her Indian village where she greeted the Sun as it rose every orning and the strange but intriguing world of the English colonits where she learned to turn cartwheels and lead the English boys hand-over-hand down the street.

"Pocahontas was only eleven years old when, on her knees, she begged her father, Chief Powhatan, to spare the life of the captured Englishman John Smith. According to tribal custom, this act made him her "brother," a kinship she never forgot. But relations between the Indians and the white settlers at the Jamestown colony were ever-changing. For ten more years, Pocahontas would be caught up in the tensions separating the two cultures. And before there could be peace between them, tradgedy came to Pocohontas."
