This is the 3rd book in Mary Jo Putney's Guardian series -- people with magical powers.
Nikolai and Jean (Guardian) are the couple in this book. As I've not read the other two books, I do not know if African magic has been introduced (Nikolai). These two fall in love in an odd way. You will also get a good fast history lesson about abolition of slavery in the late 1700 hundreds.
I like that teach me something.
When I borrowed this book, I did not know it was the 3rd one. As I enjoyed the book for its concept of magic, I'm going to hunt down the other two books.

A disappointing read. It was more a book to dump the research the author did on slavery than a romance. There was NO spark between the man and woman. I loved the other 3 guardian stories and looked forward to reading this one.
