In this novella Anne Perry tells a story of revenge set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. Celie blames her friend Amandine for the inexplicable death of her baby, whose care she had been entrusted with. When Celie is told that Amandine had been with her lover at the time of the child's death, Celie vows revenge on them both. Perry is skilled at placing the reader in the turmoil of the time and the mind of her characters, but this with its short format felt a little lacking - it reads like a writing exercise. Still, it's an interesting story to make one pause and think about human nature as well as history.
