I purchased this small pocket book for my reference collection (I'm an archaeologist). Although small, it has some good information on button history from the 1700s through the World Wars. It also has some good background information on the basic types of buttons based on material (metal, glass, fabric, ceramic, horn, bone, wood, shell, and synthetics). There is also a useful discussion of the different types of button backs with diagrams as well as a glossary, bibliography, and index. Good little reference book.
