Born in 1903 in Kiev, Irene Nemirovsky fled to Paris with her wealthy family at the time of the Russian revolution. After studying at the Sorbonne, she became a successful writer of books, newspaper articles and literary criticism. She died at Auschwitz in 1942 and it wasn't until 2006 that her novel Suite Francaise was published posthumously to worldwide acclaim. This never-before translated collection of stories, including the title work Dimanche (Sunday), exhibits the same keen insight into personal relationships as the longer work. The New York Times Book Review called it "stunning - some of the greatest, most humane and inclusive fiction that conflict has produced".
