A damaged and struggling main character, wrestling with his own demons, makes this book heart-stopping at times. The other character are equally human and well-developed. It is filled with action twists and turns galore right to the chilling and unexpected finale.

DEVIANT WAYS by Chris Mooney: July 4th starts with a real bang at Marblehead, Massachusetts where a serial killer sets off a bomb in an attempt to erase evidence of a multiple slaying. The bomb takes out several homes and brings in Jack Casey, a former hotshot FBI profiler who's attempting to mend his shattered life as a detective on the Marblehead police force. Six years earlier, he watched, bound and drugged, while a madman killed his wife and unborn child. When the house bombings continue Jacks tenuous hold on reality starts to slip and he is in danger of losing a current romantic relationship. A wisecracking former profiler named Malcolm Fletcher provides some tension relief and the villain the Sandman is also an interesting character. Mooneys style makes this read like a movie script and there is a temptation about mid-way to start casting the various characters.

My first book by Chris Mooney and it certainly won't be my last. Page-turning thriller from beginning to end, which left me with only one question: Exactly who is the deviant?

This is a very, very dark book. At times I thought why do I keep reading this? But I went on, seemingly unable to stop. It is a wild ride, but it will keep you turning pages. I don't give it five stars, but then I reserve that for books that I thoroughly enjoyed and I did not thoroughly enjoy this book. There were times it was difficult to turn the page. But I'm glad I kept turning the pages. But it is definitely not for the faint of heart.

This was a gripping thriller with many twists and turns. I liked the interaction between Jack and Malcolm as they try to outwit and out think the Sandman.
A wild ride with lots of twists and turns.
Jack Casey is an Ex FBI profiler working as a police men in a little town called Marblehead. Since watching his pregnant wife die by the hands of a psychotic killer he's come a long way from profiling, a six months months stay in a mental hospital, working in carpentry and finally accepting a job offer at the Marblehead police department. Despite his new girlfriend, which he really loves, he can't let go of his past and wife Amanda.
No a new killer is on the loose and kills whole families in his town and those close-by. The killer has an agenda, kills people and sets their houses on fire. He is well informed about explosives with huge impact. Not only destroying the scenes of crime but whole neighborhoods and streets.
After receiving a call from The Sandman Jack is informed that his life, his girlfriend's and that of her niece is on his agenda if he doesn't step back from all investigations. Jack begins pulling former strings and FBI connections to save the life of those he loves.
The Sandman is highly intelligent, a freak who knows how to manipulate and monitor people. He has a past and only one person knows him good enough to know what he's going to do. This person isn't Jack Casey but also an ex-profiler hiding from the FBI. Malcom Fletcher also has an agenda - his very own one.
There are going to be a lot of dead people along the Sandman's path until his campaign of vengeance is fulfilled.

This book introduced too many characters, had a spotty back story and seemed like it should have been a sequel to another book, but I don't believe it was. To me, it was too "all over the place" and lacked the continuity that a good thriller should. Additionally there was no mystery, the "killer" is identified, you have no idea who he is and has limited relationship with everyone and it apparently terrorizing a cop he doesn't know, hooks up with a different killer from what should have been a previous book and gets so convoluted that it is impossible to follow. That said, I read the entire book, and wasted a few hours of my life, my take on it is skip it unless you have nothing else to read!
This a wild ride all the way through and I loved it! From the beginning it will grab you and while you're hanging on it will twist and turn so many times and you'll be dizzy with the thrill of the writing it took to come up with this story---just great!
