Derek Blasberg was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended Affton High School, from which he graduated as the salutatorian of the class of 2000 with a Doctor of Athletics and a Missouri Scholar Athlete Award. He moved to New York City to study at New York University (NYU), graduating with honors in 2004 and degrees in both Journalism and Dramatic Literature. While still a student, Blasberg wrote a fashion column for the NYU paper Washington Square News, which brought him to the attention of Women's Wear Daily and lead to an internship at the industry trade publication. While still studying, Blasberg also interned at WWD's sister publication, W, in addition to working for Vogue, David Yurman, V magazine, Elite Model Management and Models One in London.

After graduation, Blasberg's first job was working at Vogue as the assistant to the managing editor, Laurie Jones. After his departure from the magazine in 2005, Blasberg briefly worked as a freelance fashion journalist, contributing most often to several international editions of Vogue (he was a contributing editor at Russian, Chinese, Spanish and Japanese Vogue), and several European fashion titles, including 10magazine, Dazed & Confused and Another Magazine.

Specializing in fashion, art and society, Blasberg is currently the editor-at-large of Condé Nast Publications's Style.com, where his international adventures are documented in a column called The Blasblog, the editor-at-large of Harper’s Bazaar, and a senior editor at V and VMAN magazines (the glossy, avante garde publications from the modern art collective Visionaire). He also routinely writes for additional international fashion magazines, most often for 10magazine, Interview magazine and the London Sunday Times. In 2008, Blasberg edited “Influence,” the fashion and art tome conceived by Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen, and since he has contributed to several books and literary projects; in 2009, he consulted on Dasha Zhukova's overhaul of Pop magazine.

In April 2010, his first book, Classy: Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady, a collection of humorous essays and illustrations, was published by Penguin Books. The modern etiquette guide was launched on an international book tour with events hosted by Chloe Sevigny, Kate Bosworth, Nicole Richie, Lauren Santo Domingo, Milla Jovovich, Leighton Meester, Dasha Zhukova, Barbara Pierce Bush, Maggie Rizer, Margherita Missoni, Byrdie Bell and Nate Berkus. In its second week, Classy was certified a New York Times best seller.

Blasberg is based in New York City, where he lives in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood with a miniature dachshund named Monster.
