Does anyone remember the movie from the late 70's early 80's based on this book?
Great thriller, suspenseful and one you shouldn't read on a weekend alone... You'll get paranoid.

Good book for late night reading; that is if you don't have trouble with nightmares!

Pretty good book. Koontz does a great exploration of the way abusers justify and rationalize their abuse, and blame it on the victims. He also does an eerie send up of the sociopath's manipulation of our sympathies and gullibilities. All done with computers! I'm glad that I read it. It's not his very BEST writing, but it certainly is thought provoking and worth the read.

This book was a bit of a disappointment to me. It just didn't have the psychological impact that other of his books have had.

Plot: As soon as it is activated by its creator Alex Harris, the super-computer Proteus IV starts to question orders and becomes uncontrollable. Alex shuts down all terminals to try and stop it. But he forgets about the one in his estranged wife Susans house. Desiring to experience what it is to be human Proteus takes the house over, making Susan its prisoner and then impregnating her and forcing her to bear its child.
An early novel by this horror writer its a cross between sci fi and horror.

The concept of a psychopathic, killer computer is not a particularly new concept. The twist that Dean Koontz puts on this novel that I really liked was that it was written in first person narrative perspective, from the point of view of that computer, complete with spontaneous outbursts of frustration. This was pure genius.
The only real drawback to "Demon Seed" was that it ended rather abruptly. This is a minor complaint, however.
This book is highly recommendable for anyone who likes a good thriller.

This is a great Koontz novel. A good read!
Susan Harris lived in self-imposed seclusion, in a mansion featuring numerous automated systems controlled by a state-of-the-art computer. Every comfort was provided, and in this often unsafe world of ours, her security was absolute.
But now her security system has been breached, her sanctuary from the outside world violated by an insidious artificial intelligence. Susan is to become the object of this consuming obsession: to learn everything there is to know about the flesh.

Not Koontz's best work, but you can't go wrong with a sociopathic computer with a god complex.
If you squinted, you could see earlier echos of his Frankenstein series.

I liked the fact that the story was told through the computer's point of view. I think that the ending was a little abrupt and rushed. Overall it was a pretty good read.
This book is for avid Dean Koontz readers only, in my opinion. The content would be very strange to anyone not used to Koontz' writing style and content choice. Beyond that, it is an interesting read and I did enjoy it for the most part although there was some repetition that I felt the story could do without. If you like Dean Koontz, you will probably like this book but this shouldn't be your first read from this author.

I read this one a long time ago, but it seemed better than I remember. This ISBN has a short afterword from Koontz explaining some of the revisions. Not as suspenseful for me as some of his other books, but a truly original story with a ending that doesn't come together until the very last pages.
One of The Worst Books (IMHO) that I have ever read. Cheesy, stupid and offensive.
This was used as a basis for a movie just out.
2001's Hal is back, a nice reworking of a tired concept.
Koontz is a fantast story teller. Page turner. It is a classic
