Han Alister is a reformed thief trying to earn an honest living for his family. When he and his clan friend, Dancer, catch three young wizards setting the sacred mountain aflame, Han ends up taking an amulet from one of them. Han learns the amulet once belonged to the evil Demon King who almost destroyed the world, and the wizard Han stole the amulet from will stop at nothing to get it back.

Han isn't the only one with problems; the princess, Raisa, has been living a life of freedom away from court and has returned after three years to discover her mother wants to marry her off. If that weren't bad enough, there's a sinister plot and strange things going on at court that threaten to ruin the queendom.

A sweeping fantasy told through alternating points of view, Chima's tale of a world in turmoil is a page-turner the reader will be hard pressed to put down.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters and the world, but would have liked more interaction between the two main characters. It just wasn't possible in this book, but it sets up a future where more of what I crave is a huge possibility. I can't wait to read more in THE EXILED QUEEN.

Loved this book! I cannot wait to see how things evolve in the next book with the two main characters.

This is the start to one of my favorite series! I enjoyed this full, complicated world Cinda Williams Chima has created and fell in love with Han and Raisa right away. This is an engaging story of courageous people who face their situations and fight for what is most important no matter what the odds are.

The story of The Demon King focuses on Han Alister, a reformed street lord trying to make an honest living, and Raisa Ana'Mariana, princess heir to the realm, who is beginning to see the true state of the queendom. Both Han and Raisa are fighting to protect what they love without compromising. Han tries to provide for his impoverished family while being hunted by the most powerful wizard in the realm. Raisa is beginning to see that the queendom is not quite so prosperous as she has always believed nor the royal family as popular. Queen Mariana is planning for her future, but is the path she's choosing what is really best for Raisa and the queendom? And if not, how can Raisa make her own path?

This series will keep you turning the pages from page 1 all the way to the last page of book 4!

Oh fantasy novels, why must you be so hit and miss? I wish I could say I enjoyed this book, and I think the biggest reason was probably because Im just not among the target audience. That being said, there are tons of young adult books that Ive enjoyed despite being an adult, so its very possible to write something that appeals to a broader audience...
