Democracy in America Vol 2 Author:Alexis de Tocqueville, John Stuart Mill, Henry Reeve (Translator) In two unabridged volumes with a critical appraisal of each volume by John Stuart Mill. This is volume 2. — Shortly after John Stuart Mill published his extensive review of Democracy in America, Tocqueville wrote to Mill: "Of all my reviewers you are perhaps the only one who has thoroughly understood me; who has taken a general bird... more »'s-eye view of my ideas; who sees their ulterior aim, and yet has preserved a clear perception of the details."
Five years later, when the second part of Tocqueville's book appeared, Mill again responded in a definitive summary and critique, directing his attention particularly to the new areas opened up in the monumental study. "That part of Democracy in America," Mill wrote, "which was first published (Volume 1 of this edition) professes to treat of the political effects of Democracy; the second is devoted to its influence on society in the widest sense: on the relations of private life, on intellect, morals, and the habits and modes of feeling which constitutes national character...No one will refuse [M. de Tocqueville] the praise of having probed the subject to a depth which had never before been sounded."
This edition, combining Tocqueville's masterpiece and Mill's famous appraisals, brings together, in their mutual interaction, two of the most influential liberal thinkers of the 19th century.« less
