Giles Blunt writes of life in a small north Canadian town, with police detectives John Cardinal and Lisa Delorme. His plots are carefully and thoroughly developed, with some complexity and understanding of human nature. The police are competent and decent. The weather plays a large role in Blunt's stories. I have enjoyed all of his books. This one features gangs, and losers, and violent inhumane people! His first mystery; FORTY WORDS OF SORROW was a super book. Cardinal has his own personal devils to deal with, and these are a sub-theme in the books.

This is a mystery based in Canada. I didn't even get far enough into it to figure out the storyline. I just couldn't get past the animosity between the local police, the RCMP and the CSIS (some kind of terrorism squad). I found it rather tedious and boring. None of the characters are likeable and I found myself not caring one way or the other what happened. To me that is the kiss of death. This is the first book I've "read" by this author and it will be the last.

I thought this was much weaker than Forty Words for Sorrow.

I just couldn't get into this book no matter how hard I tried to continue reading it! If a book doesn't draw me in and make me feel like I don't want to put it down then to me that is not the book for me! Others may like it. I just couldn't finish it!
