Another great one by George! This was about Barbara and her Pakistani neighbor. She finds out he is called away to the beach to help out some family in crisis. She figures out through press releases that he is there to help his family with the murder of the future son-in-law. Since she is on leave to recover from her injuries from the last book, she decides to go to the coast and see if she can see whats going on. She finds out, the lead investigator is someone she went to the academy with. Emily. Emily lets her in on the case and it takes off from there. This is strictly about Havers. Lynley, and Helen are on their honeymoon and St. James and Deborah do not appear. The plot revolves around the relationship between the Pakistanis and the local British who are trying to live in harmony in this coastal town. The murder exposes true prejudices and Barbara ends up in the middle. George is a master at the mystery and suspense. Her plots are so intricate, she weaves her way to grab your attention and you are caught in the web till the end. She has become one of my favorite authors.

So far I am enjoying The Inspector Lynley series but this one was a disappointment. Maybe because Lynley wasn't in it.

I found that it really dragged for me. Ms. George loves the English language and obscure vocabulary and she uses both to the hilt here. I thought the book could have been 500 pages not 700. And the "who done it" was a let down.

One of my all-time favorites of Elizabeth George's books. Lynley is out of town so Barbara Haver, his partner, is the main character here. George's book is complex and quite suspenseful. Out of one murder, a few other mysteries develop along the way. Despite the fact that Barbara is supposed to be on vacation, she travels to this seaside town and gets involved in helping to solve a murder. There's racial tension here also. Many Moslem Pakistanis live in the town and one of them is a wealthy businessman who is trying to become part of the town. It is one of the executives who he just hired who was murdered. This heighthens the racial tension, especially on the Moslems' side. There are several other themes in this book but they all blend together well. I guessed who the killer was pretty soon into the book but that took none of my pleasure away in reading this book. George has the ability to take a person into another world where it's easy to leave this one behind.

You will hate to reach the end of this one. The author is at the t0p as a English mystery writers, and with this proves that she will there for some.

Contemporary English mystery with a large cast of intelligent characters. And the villian is a tough one to ferret out!

Another great mystery from Elizabeth George. This isn't an Inspector Lynley story but rather a Barbara Havers story...he's not in it. But you'll be one step up if you read this one before you read the next Lynley since her actions in this novel are a big part of In Pursuit of the Proper Sinner-the next one in the series.

A great British, Scotland Yard mystery with Barbara Havers. This group of mysteries is one of the best.

Balford-le-Nez is a dying seacoast town on the coast of Essex. But when a member of the town's small but growing Asian community is found dead, the sleepy town ignites. Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers arranges to have herself assigned to the investigation, but this time, she'll have to solve the crime without her longtime partner Detective Inspector Lynley. Havers must probe not only the mind of a murderer and a case very close to her own heart, but the terrible price people pay when they deceive others -- and themselves.

Lynley and LadyHelen do a cameo apperance as the leave for their honeymoon. This one is all Det. Sgt. Barbara Havers. Great story line with insights into another culture. I have been wanting to see more of Havers.

Balford-le-Nez is a dying seatown on the coast of Essex. But when a member of the town's small but growing Asian community, is found dead on its beach, his neck broken, sleepy Balford-le-Nez ignites. Working solo, without her long-time partner Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, Sergeant Barbara Havers must probe not only the mind of a murderer and a case very close to her own heart, but the terrible price people pay for deceiving others...and themselves.

I love George's characters. They are all rich, deep and superb. She is one GREAT mystery writer and Deception on His Mind is one of her best!
It's a nice change that Havers gets the book pretty much to herself and proves herself without Linley.

A good story, altho I prefer to have both detectives involved, instead of Barbara Havers alone. The story provided a look into the "Asian" - Pakistani - subculture of England that I have no knowledge of. There were a few questions I had at the end of the book which I thought were not answered to my satisfaction
