Death Waxed Over - Candlemaking, Bk 3
Author: Tim Myers
Hot Whacks — It's Founder's Day in New Conover, North Carolina, and the festivities are lively. So lively, in fact, that Harrison Black -- owner of At Wick's End -- doesn't hear the shot that kills Gretel Barnett. True, her candle shop was a rival to his store. And true, his ruthless competitor was shot mere feet away from him. Bu...  more »

The 3rd in the Candlemaking Mystery series, this was a good book. I really enjoy Harrison Black as the main character. He's down to earth, stubborn and forthright, yet isn't the annoying type like so many other amateur sleuths can be. I liked the premise of this story, but I was able to figure out who the murderer was rather early on. This one includes not only candlemaking tips but a recipe as well.

I thought this book was very dull. I enjoyed the previous books in the series, but this one took me about four days to finish whereas in the past his books took me a couple hours. I didn't think this book was as humorous as its predecessors, and Harrison's character became very boring.

Tim Myers writes several series. This is the third book in the Candlemaking series. (When I find the first two - somewhere in the piles of books at my house - I will post them on PBS as well)

Harrison Black is just trying to get a few more customers by putting up a booth at the Founder's Day activity in Conover, North Carolina. Unfortunately, a candle competitor has made it her goal to put Harrison out of business with her store which is part of a national chain. Even more unfortunately, that competitor is shot at the Founder's activity and Harrison becomes suspect number one because a witness thinks she saw him throwing the gun into the trash. It doesn't help that that witness has very close ties to the local newspaper. It's up to Harrison to try to clear his name with or without the approval of the local police.

Along with trying to prove he did not commit murder, Harrison becomes a reluctant help to his ex-girlfriend Becka who is being stalked. He discovers that his handyman, Pearly, had a relationship with Gretel (the competition). Pearly has decided to leave town for a few days which causes the law to gaze his way, too, as a suspect, so Harrison feels the need to clear his friend's name along with his own. Harrison also manages to offend his best customer, Mrs. Jorgenson, who is not open to being appeased. All in all, things are just not going well.

This was a good continuation of the series. The resolution of one of the problems that belongs to another character appears to be a lead into the next book. We'll see.

This was a good, quick read.

Death Waxed Over by Tim Myers
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The third book in the Candlemaking series by Tim Myers. You know, i really wasn't sure i would like a male author, nothing against them, but writing a cozy mystery, I just wasn't sure. He actually gotthe candlemaking aspects and it works. So much so that I have breezed through books one, two and now three!

Harrison is accused of murder! A rival candle shop opens not far away, and the owner is loud and brash about hating Harrison and that she is going to "bury him", when she falls over dead at a festival, a "witness" swears that Harrison shot her, even saying she heard Harrison say he was going to bury her, well that was all well and fine, but it was actually the dead woman that said she was going to bury Harrison. Too bad for Harrison that the witness happened to be the wife of the owner of the only local newspaper. To save his business, and his life, Harrison investigates and figures out what really happened.

This was another well-written and engaging book by Tim Myers. I liked it so much that I researched more about the author to find that her has two other series, which I am now going to have to find and work on reading. Speaking of the series, there is a post on my blog titled Author Tim Myers, and it listed the series i found and the books in order for each series, yes I have a thing about reading books out of order, so i am always working on listing books in order.

Another great clean cozy. Tim knows how to write a fast, fun story, clean, no bad language and good information about the industry he is the owner of. Good tips about candlemaking, good twist to the murder. Very enjoyable.
