Gabriel Allon hasn't been back to Vienna since his wife and child died there in a terrorist bombing. But when his mentor in the Israeli intelligence agency dispatches him to the Austrian capitol to investigate a murderous explosion at the Wartime Claims and Inquiry Office, his presence alerts the attention of police officials who have reasons to stand in the way of his investigation. When a concentration camp survivor is killed who could link the father of Austria's next chancellor to Nazi atrocities and an ongoing coverup by the Catholic Church, Allon discovers another connection to the conspiracy, this one closer to his own past than he could ever have imagined. This is the third of Silva's thrillers featuring Allon, the art restorer who's also a spy (The Confessor and The English Assassin are the first two).

Author: Daniel Silva

In starting this book, I've done what I hate to do â read book three in a trilogy before book one. All I know is now I want to get my hands on book one and book two.

The main character, Gabriel Allon, is the same in the three books, as is his life, his back story. His job â spy â is also the same. I am assuming that the individual situations he gets involved in close with the end of each book.

Since Gabriel Allon is an operative for the Israeli network, and is the son of a survivor of the Holocaust, Jewish issues and concerns figure prominently in the series. The author describes the books as âthree novels dealing with the unfinished business of the Holocaustâ.

This is an old-fashioned thriller with many characters in many countries. There are twists and turns. A person's history can come back to haunt him.

Art Restorer and Mossad spy Gabriel Allon is sent to Vienna to investigate a bombing that gravely injures an old friend who works for the WarTimes Claims and Inquiries. Along the way, he discovers his mother's past during the war and a man who would resort to anything to keep his identity a secret from the world.

I particularly enjoyed the way the story wove around the machinations of the Catholic Church while delving into the Holocaust in a way that was greatly moving and put in awesome perspective! The author never loses the thread of the story to get on any sort of platform and I rate him as a master teller of the intricacies of European history. Also, his characters are so complete and fierce but vulnerable!

What an enjoyable and quick read. Quick because I couldn't keep away from it until the last page was read. Each book in the series is better than the last.

I'm reading this out of sequence, but it did not detract from my enjoyment of the story and characters. Will move on to the first in the series very soon.

As with all the other Daniel Silva books the story line is excellent and the plot ever changing, but integrating a portrait and an SS Nazi and making it plausible was amazing. As soon as we put down one we are reaching for the next. bogie & tene'
