i tried reading this, but it was so tremendously dry that i gave up after about 45 pages. it's just not my cup of tea.

The first in the John Coffin mystery series by Gwendoline Butler (who is now 90), "Death Lives Next Door" is a delicious British mystery in which a woman, Marion Manning, realizes that she has someone watching her, day in and day out, and this man even follows her out of town. Dr. Manning had been an anthropoligist but changed careers when a trip to Central America some years ago turned devastating. She lives by herself with the exception of a colorful housekeeper named Joyo who Marion says is her cousin.

When a murder occurs in the street where Marion lives, Inspector John Coffin from Scotland Yard is called in to work with local police to solve the crime. This crime won't be the only one committed before Coffin figures it all out. I like the character of John Coffin very much. He's easy going and does his work with a pleasant attitude and dedication to finding out who the perpetrator is in this tale of multiple crimes.

The story takes place sometime after WWII, but I had to remind myself it wasn't the present day. The characters are all very interesting personalities. I plan to read more of this long series that began many years ago.

Recommended for mystery lovers and readers who like traditional British mysteries.
