A very interesting story that takes place in Chicago, just after the 1893 World's Fair. At that time there was a great depression. Many people worked long hours for very little pay under horrible conditions. But these people could not complain or their jobs would be taken by other men and women who were willing to work for any amount of money. At the same time, a smallpox epidemic is spreading due to the poor health conditions. Smallpox came to the World's Fair and was spread through contact in the Midway of the fair. Emily Cabot goes to work at Hull House, a settlement house in Chicago that was co-founded in 1889 by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr. Jane Adams in 1931 became the first woman to win the Nobel Peace prize for her work for peace, public health, mothers and children.
