Kathryn Ardleigh is everything the Victorian English gentlewoman is not - outspoken, free-thinking, American...and a writer of the frowned upon "penny-dreadfuls." She shocked her ancestral home at Bishop's Keep - and captured the interest of detective Sir Charles Sheridan as they solved their first case together.

Now the brutal demise of a local constable and the mysterious disappearance of a child have the sleuthing couple on the trail of deadly greed and criminal mischief once again. And with the help of a shy young woman who calls herself Beatrix Potter, Kate intends to uncover the sinister secrets of Gallows Green...

I loved this book, more for the relationship between the heroine and Beatrix Potter than the mystery. The authors develop personalities so well, and give a wonderful feeling of the time period.

After reading the first book in the series, I was a bit hesitant to check out the second book. I am glad I did. The introduction of Beatrix Potter as one of Kate's new friends could have been over the top, but the author uses her well. I especially enjoyed how Charles is subtly introducing "science" to help solve crimes even when the end result might not be the one wished for. The limited acceptance of Kate as a social peer is also addressed thus giving a further glimpse into how the social classes were divided. I look forward to reading the next book.

A truly wonderful sequel to the first novel in this series. Old and new characters are well developed and the main plot and various subplots are well done and entertaining.

After reading the first two novels in this series, I have to wonder how two authors who live in Texas can write so well about England in the 1890s.

I enjoy the Victorian-Edwardian series by Susan Wittig Albert and her husband. (Robin Paige) The meticulous research done on the historical characters adds much to the book, but I am so sorry it meant the series ending because the research was too much!

One of the drawbacks in writing a review is by the time PBS asks for it, I have read another twenty books in between!
