Key characters are Major Robert Kurland, who resides in a small village and was injured in the battle of Waterloo when his horse fell on him, and Lucy Harrington, oldest daughter of the widowed rector. Broken legs keep him bedridden. angry, and in extreme pain. Lucy, to help him recover, often visits.

The story begins when he sees a dim figure with a burden from his bedroom window. The sinister vision is out of place so he shares it with Lucy. Small items disappear from several homes and two servant women vanish. Are the events linked? No one locks doors.

Set in the Regency era, this cozy mystery is an easy read with a competent and independent heroine and a strong arrogant hero cared for by a former military comrade and his valet. Always physically and mentally active, he resents his immobility. She is restrained by her controlling father who favors her younger more attractive sister. Determining what is going on in the village serves as a dangerous diversion for the them. Yet as they discover more and more a dangerous killer may choose one or both as victims.
