Death Is Like a Box of Chocolates is the first installment in the A Chocolate Covered Mystery series. Michelle Serrano and Erica Russell are best friends and the co-owners of Chocolates and Chapters, the combination chocolate shop and bookstore.
Michelle and Erica are excited to be hosting the Great Fudge Cook off as part of the upcoming Memorial Day weekend Arts Festival. The ladies along with the other committee members are working hard to make the event a huge success, bringing a much needed boost to tourism in the small town of West Riverdale, Maryland.
When fellow committee member and owner of the Main Street photography shop, Denise Coburn is found dead in the chocolate shop poisoned by one of Michelle's delicious truffles, Michelle and Erica set out to clear Michelle's name and save the reputation of Chocolates and Chapters.
Larry Stapleton, Denise's no good ex boyfriend, wasn't happy about the breakup and had broken into her studio weeks earlier. Plus, it appears that Denise was having financial difficulties and may have captured something in her photos she was using to blackmail some of the local townspeople, including the husband of Erica's sister Colleen.
A terrific cast of characters including Erica's brother, Benjamin "Bean" Russell. Bean is a world famous journalist in town for a book signing and also the subject of Michelle's high school crush. Leo Serrano is Michelle's brother, a disabled war vet who also raised Michelle when their parents were killed. Lieutenant Bobby Simkin, Erica's high school boyfriend, and shop employees Kona, Kayla and Zach.
This book captured my attention from page one, after all what could be better than chocolate and books? A fast paced storyline with plenty of suspects, romantic tension between old flames, a shop that makes you want to stop in for a bite of chocolate and a book, a furry feline, laugh out loud antics and mouthwatering chocolate recipes. I can't wait to get my hands on the next in the series - Truffled to Death.
