In a remote Andean village, three men have disappeared. Peruvian Army corporal Lituma and deputy Tomas investigate, but the townspeople resent and mistrust them. To pass the time, Tomas entertains Lituma with the tale of his affair with a prostitute, evocatively mingling past and present, the corporeal and the spiritual, asuspense story and a political allegory of contemporary Peru.
