I figured out whodunnit and why pretty early on but that didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book. The characters are so well drawn and the atmosphere so enjoyable that I didn't mind a bit. It just enabled me to feel a teeny bit superior when the killer was revealed at the end.

In this cozy British mystery the actual murder does not occur in the first 100 pages. One suspects who the victim will be, and one sees a number of people who might wish to commit murder. The charm of fifty-something Mrs Mallory, her perceptiveness and her insight into human nature, made the book enjoyable, even though I guessed the murderer before the final chapter. For me,Hazel Holt's mysteries are an antidote to a too harried life. They are gentle and a little slow, a relaxing read.
