What makes "Dear John" so compelling is that from the beginning, the reader pretty much knows how it will end - well almost! Even so, I was propelled along, hoping for a different outcome or an unexpected twist. We got that twist, and although it wasn't particularly comfortable, it was totally in keeping with Sparks' understanding of what real love is.

It is Nicholas Sparks what more needs to be said? No really, it is an awsome book. The more this man writes the more he is able to hit that bitter sweet nail right on the head.
For those who love Sparks' books you won't be dissappointed and for those who have never read one.....you are just missing out.

I have read all of Nicholas Sparks' books, and while the endings usually have me wanting it to be different, I must say I do enjoy them. This one is no different. Unlike the other gentleman that reviewed this book, I must say that I totally related to this book. Be forwarned, there is a little betrayal in it, but when is there not in love? The characters were very believable. I related to this a lot more than most probably would have as I had something of this manner happen to me. John was a character I could relate to, someone who wasn't sure about what he wanted in life, but knowing he wanted more. When he meets Savannah, he has met his soul mate. While some people don't believe in such, I do, and I can relate to John's devotion to her, no matter what the circumstances, no matter what the betrayal, no matter how much it hurts. While I know that there has never been a sequel done on any oh Sparks' books, this is one that left me saying, no, don't let this happen, it has to be different. I wish he would do a sequel on this one. Definitely a book that requires a box of tissues nearby as it is a tear jerker. If you are looking for a book that will capture your heart, this is it.

Great book about finding love, losing love and growing in the process, and making the hardest decision in his life. I really enjoyed this book and it was a fast read.

John Tyree was raised by his father, a coin collector who seemed so obsessed by his coins that he couldn't talk about anything else. He was a typical teenage rebel: drinking, fighting, hanging out with a group of like-minded friends. Not enough ambition between them to even get a decent job. One day, realizing that he wasn't happy with a life that was going nowhere, he joined the Army and changed both his attitude and his outlook.
Home on leave, he meets Savannah Lynn Curtis, a college student visiting the area with a group working for Habitat for Humanity. They spend as much time as possible together and quickly fall in love. But they both have other commitments. College for her, the Army life in Germany for him. They write, they call, they e-mail, but its not enough to keep her from falling in love with someone closer to home and inevitably, she writes the Dear John letter.
The second half of the story will both break your heart and restore your belief in humanity. Can you love someone so much that their happiness is more important than your own? Can three people in love ever work it out so that everyone is happy? The ending is such a surprise that you'll never see it coming, unless you cheat and read it first.
I highly recommend this book, but have your tissues ready - you're going to need them.

I love all Nicholas Sparks books but this had a twist with some psychological knowledge behind it making it that much more interesting.

I didn't find this one up to his usual standards. Also, he was way off with the military lifestyle portrayal of the lead character, sometimes to the point I (an Army wife) found it laughable. But it's a nice weekend read.

Another beautiful story told by Sparks. This bittersweet love story about a young couple, John and Savannah, who are determined to keep their love alive despite distance and circumstances. Beware -- this story will tug on all your heartstrings.

This book follows a young man as he grows from adolesence to adult and his relationship with his father and girlfriend. It's your typical Nicholas Sparks book in that you better have the Kleenex close by.

This book is absolutely amazing. Nicholas Sparks does a wonderful job in telling his stories. Any book that can make me laugh and cry both (which I cried plenty at the end of it) is well worth the read. I love how from beginning to end while I'm reading along, I can actually see in my minds eye, everything that is going on. From John and Savannah sitting on the pier, sitting huddled together on the crates in the Habitat house while it's pouring rain, John reading the last letter she ever sent him, everything he went through with his dad, him sitting in the hospital room talking with Tim, all the way to John perched just outside Savannah's ranch waiting to see if she still looks at the moon on the first night of the full moon and to his surprise she does. I can always picture what the characters in a book look like and what not but to be able to actually visualize everything in this book...WOW!!! It truly is a great book. I would post my copy but I just don't think I'm ready to let go of it yet, I may want to read it again sometime.

I usually enjoy Nicholas Sparks' books but this one was way too depressing. If you are looking for a happy romance, avoid this.

This is definitely the worst Nicholas Sparks book that I have read. He's following his formula too closely (young, energetic, happy lovers who can't be together and get seperated, only to be reunited years later - basically, if you've seen The Notebook, you don't need to read this book, it's the same thing, only more annoying. I actually noticed the same exact lines being used in this book that were used in The Notebook. "It was real, wasn't it? You and me? If you've seen the movie as many times as I have, you know what I'm talking about.) The ending is heartwarming, although predictable. Another good thing about this book is the fact that it incorporates some psycology and gives a view of military life, which is different for Sparks (although I don't know how accurate it is.) The narrator, John, is likable enough but I honestly found myself hating Savannah. I just didn't feel like she was a believable character at all, and found myself literally laughing aloud at some of the things she said.

Having enjoyed the movies from "Message in a Bottle" and "Notebook", I anticipated a pleasant, but possibly sad read. I have been somewhat disappointed. I have a hard time relating to the story and to the characters. Savannah is a too-good-to-be-true graduating senior from UNC. She is beautiful, thoughtful, articulate, avid Christian, athletic, enthusiastic, playful and much more. She is saving her self, in the personal intimate ways, for a person she loves where those things would be so much more meaningful. Is that believable? Not to me. Attractive, yes. But page after page reveals her charms, beauty and altruism so much that I began to wonder if the book is about anything else. Sure, I would like to meet her--long ago--the girl of my dreams, but it doth go on to long in that vein.
John is quite a contrast; so much so that it is unclear how they would connect in such a romance. He is on leave from an army base in Germany, a tatooed ex-rebelious youth with little education. His dad is an oddity--a person John is ashamed of and estranged from. However, he is staying with his dad, meets miss Unreal and off they go into unreal love.
Eventually I gave up, preferring to spend time with something more like I might encounter in life.
I like the author in most every way. He writes with grace--beautiful phraseology. Others of his works are probably great. I hope to check that out.

I loved this book! Which I was not expecting. I loved the fact that it was real. It really had a chance of happening and did not include a lot of over done drama that so many books seem to have, though I admit I do like to fit them in there too. I just felt like I had to find out why (loved the way Sparks started it). Took a turn or two I was not expecting and it showed a few relationships I was not expecting, which I loved.

I found the story to be average at best. It is well-written but I found that I could not identify with the female character. I was disappointed with her reasoning behind why she must write him a "Dear John" letter and found it difficult to believe she ever had true feelings for him in the first place.

As different from his quiet father as fire from water, John Tyree enlists in the Army for a fresh start and an escape from the awkward situation at home. Working his way up the ranks, John comes home to Wilmington, North Carolina out of obligation rather than a genuine desire to see his father. On one such leave, John happens to be in the right place at the right time as a young co-ed's purse is knocked into the ocean and he rushes to assist the "damsel in distress". So begins his relationship with Savannah Lynn Curtis, who is in the area building homes for Habitat for Humanity.
Despite the short duration of their stays in town, John and Savannah feel drawn to each other and are quickly spending every free moment together. Savannah is young, at times naive, and attached to her family, while John is old beyond his years and accustomed to short, meaningless flings. Their differences aside, both are swept away by their feelings and find themselves declaring their love for each other as the few weeks of their stays wind down. Savannah promises to write and wait for John to return from his tour of duty and they count down days to his next leave and his discharge from the Army. Then September 11th happens...
John is torn between the duty to his country and his desire to go home to Savannah, and hopes that she understands his ultimate decision to re-enlist. Savannah is initially supportive and the couple begins another countdown to John's new discharge date, but the distance only exacerbates their differences and creates rifts they may not be able to cross.
Nicholas Sparks writes with an understanding of the passion and urgency two people feel when they fall in love and made me feel invested in the story at hand. I blocked out the outside world and turned page after page, eager to know what happened to John and Savannah and hoping for a happy ending despite the cliche such an ending would represent. "Dear John" is an easy and compelling read, and one that may surprise you and defy your expectations.

Like watching the movie, reading Dear John made me laugh, cry, sigh, and smile several times throughout the book. Although I was not fond of the cliches (i.e. "my love for her grew stronger and stronger") and some of Sparks' stylistic choices, my overall impression of the book was highly favorable. The images he creates astound me, and the ending was heartbreakingly fitting.

I've read all of Nicholas Sparks books; some are better than others....this one is my favorite along with The Notebook. It had more than one theme in it and I loved that the female character had some morals. There is also a great understanding of people who are different; who have some sort of mental or emotional troubles. I didn't expect it to be more than a romance, but it was and I really liked that!

Sparks is brilliant at expressing emotion from a man's point of view. John discovers the meaning of love for a parent, for a woman, and ultimately for himself. War as a background only serves to contrast the pain of "real" life.

After reading the preface I should have known I would love this book and I hated it at the same time. The preface reeks of an unhappy ending. As you read the story you instinctively know exactly what is going to happen from one chapter to the other. Nothing is a mystery. This is one of those stories where you hope everyone ends up happy in the end, but the person your pulling for the most gets screwed.

An angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life--until he meets the girl of his dreams, Savannah. Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who has captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. "Dear John," the letter read...and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true loveâand face the hardest decision of his life...http://www.nicholassparks.com/LearnMore.asp?BookID=12

Sparks has such a knack for characterization, which is why I adore his books. But does he have to be so BRUTAL??!! SUCH a sad ending. Almost makes me wish I hadn't read the book.
Absolutely loved this book. I was sucked in from the first page and finished it in one day. It is the ultimate page turner.
While I generally like Nicholas Sparks' books, I hate the endings (When someone dies)While this isn't one of those, its not a happy-ever-after, either. It's a lot like real life, where you learn.
Not his best, but still very good.
Great romance with not the typical ending! It was a true story of life and love that we can all relate to in one way or another. An easy read that you won't be able to put down!
predictable - still a good quick read
Another great love story by Nicholas Sparks! I'm a huge fan, and a romantic at heart. I could relate to this story being a military wife who has experienced the goodbyes and the heartbreak that comes after. Sparks told this story so beautifully. And I never would've expected such an ending...as much as you want to know that John and Savannah end up together, the unselfishness and sacrifice at the end is an awesome description of TRUE LOVE. Thank you, Mr. Sparks.
read the book before the movie came out. as with all the nicholas sparks books, i loved it. i don't always like the when they turn the book into a movie, but i watch it nonetheless. the movie was close to the story line which was great. if you have a chance to pick up any nicolas sparks books they are all great (movies too!)
I still heart Nicholas Sparks. I flew through this book in 3 days. I was reading it in my car at stoplights. It's just such an easy romantic read that sucks you in.
The main character Savannah is from Lenior, NC which is literally 15-20 minutes from my hometown of Morganton. So needless to say I could relate to her. The boy John is from Wilmington which I have been to many times. Savannah goes to UNC which is right up the road from where I am now. So really the whole story felt like it could be written by people I actually might know.
Savannah meets John while he is on leave from his army base in Germany. She is staying with a group of students from UNC who are there for a month to build some houses for Habitat for Humanity. He is there for 2 weeks visiting his dad. Their paths cross and immediately they are smitten with each other. By the time John's leave is up, they are full blown head-over-heels in love.
The rest of the story is about how they try to keep their relationship and love going through letters and short phone conversations and visits. You'll have to read it to find out the rest, but I will tell you it made me think about what true love really looks like and acts like.
It doesn't have that happily ever after ending I love, but it doesn't have that tragic someone dies ending either. At first I hated the ending because it didn't wrap up everything in a nice little happy bow, but I appreciate it and what the author is trying to get across.
It's a story about soul mates and love- in many different forms.

This book was a little slow and somewhat predictable. Still worth a read if you're a Nicholas Sparks fan.
Not up to Sparks' earlier stories, in my opinion. The characters are likable and the father, in particular, was exceptionally well depicted. The story is a tear-jerker, let's face it, but the book had more substance than the movie. (I always like the book better.)
This was my first book to read by Nicolas Sparks. It was very good and easy to read, didn't take long to finish. I'll read another by this author!
One of those cases where the book exceeded the movie. Of course that's almost always true but Sparks earlier works The Notebook and A Walk to remember were good adaptations. This one lacked a certain something and yet many younger viewers might like the movie better.
The movie is much, much better than the book. That is rarely the case, but this time it definitely is.
This book wasn't what I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, it was pretty good, but it was definitely not as good as I had heard from other people. It would be if you're not a very serious reader, but as someone who reads a lot, it was a little bit of a let-down. It seemed sort of... outrageous. The ending, however, was perfect. Loved it. If you want to read a heartbreak, this is it. Quick read.
I find it hard to review this one. I liked the book, and I cried while reading. So there was an emotional attachment, but it just wasn't an unforgettable book for me. It was kind of like fodder - just there to pass the time. I hate to say that about it, because I did enjoy it. I just missed something with this one. I haven't seen the movie yet, so I didn't have a disconnect because it didn't follow the movie or vice versa. Maybe as time passes I'll be able to figure it out. But on with the review...
I really liked Savannah. John was an ok character but I just got the "dumb jock" sterotype stuck in my head and couldn't get past that with him. I don't know they the jock thing stuck, since he was in the Army, but that's what stuck. Even when he was being a sweetheart I didn't see it as being realistic. Savannah was so caring and had such a big heart, but she also knew she had to take care of her heart and wouldn't let herself get hurt. I could see her falling in love with John, but I also could see that it would be short lived. They were two different people and he didn't really suit her.
I would have liked to have had more about John's father, as I think he was the "sweetheart" influence on John. Maybe if he'd been a little bit more developed and a bigger part of the story then I wouldn't have had the negative view of John and his ability to be a anything but cool hearted. Through the whole book I just felt like John's emotions were a bit distant, I know he didn't want to "show" his emotions but everyone has emotions whether they like it or not. So I would have liked to see more of John's dad and John's emotions.
I was also kind of disappointed at the end. There was a big build up and no real resolution. I am going to watch the movie. I've heard it's pretty different from the book and that it's one of the few movies that is better than the book.
I will read more of Sparks' novels because I do like a good love story. Other's of his that I've read were really good. So I think maybe this one was just a fluke!

Good story line, keeps you captivated.
Very interesting read. It keeps you turning pages. A friend told me about the movie, and the book does not end the same way the movie does. I think I will like the movie better.
One of the best books I have read! I recommend reading the book before watching the movie, because the book is soooo much better. (as usual) I never cry reading books, but it gave goosebumps all over!!(and I wasn't cold!) I literally couldn't put this book down!
If you had or haven't seen this movie. Read the book. It is awesome

Decent book, just didn't have the ending I was hoping for or expecting.

Found this book to be a very sweet yet tragic love story. Cried at the end and wish it had ended differently but it's true to Nicholas Sparks fashion.
I loved this book for so many different reasons. I've read almost all Nicholas Sparks novels and I either love them or hate them. I think this one is so moving because it follows life closely. Rarely does my life reflect those novels where guy gets the girl and everything is hunky dory. This one showcases the bittersweet aspects of love, duty, family, and choice. It's real, emotional, and worth reading.
Wish there was a 'part 2' for ths book!
The romance is GREAT! The ending isn't what I had hoped for or expected! Good book!
I really enjoyed this book overall. Their were a few parts that were kind of slow, especially in the beginning. But once the story progressed, it got better.
The story starts off as John is a troubled kid, with a father he does not relate too. He is at the beach and falls in love with a girl named Savannah. They hit it off, and hang together for awhile, until he has to go back to Germany where he is stationed. He is about to get out of the military and then 911 happened. He wants to do his country a favor or the right thing and reenlist. After he does this, the couples problems start to happen.
The end is good, if you love someone, you do anything to make them happy. No matter what that is.

My favorite by Nicholas Sparks. I teared up several times while reading it. I could write a HUGE review about this book but then it would ruin it. All I can say is read this book! BTW I saw the movie this weekend. It was wonderful too. It didn't stick to the exact story of the book but what book to movie tie in really does?
Amazing book! This one and "A bend in the road" are by far my two favorites. Dear John is a great story, anyone would love this book. And also I recommend reading the book before seeing the movie. :) The movie sticks pretty close to the book though.. so I was happy bout that!
I am normally not a very big Nicholas Sparks fan, but this book actually was one of his better ones that I have read. I finished it within a couple of days, and while I had it almost figured out fairly quickly (plus the title nearly gives away part of the story line in of itself), I felt that the writing was better than most of Sparks' books. Many reviews were negative towards this one, and typically I feel negatively towards his books myself. However, this one gave a taste of what Sparks can do if he tries hard enough.
It goes without saying that Nicholas Sparks is one of today's "master" storytellers and he does not disappoint with Dear John. I loved it. The love that John and Savannah shared was written in a way that made me feel as if I was part of it all. I laughed, I smiled, I cried. I felt everything that the characters were feeling, as if I was on the journey with them. The ending in the book is different than the movie. I preferred the movie ending but hell...I'm a sucker like that.
Very good book, much better read than the movie.
One of his best books.. Will make you cry and think about the good in life.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I read "The Notebook" also. Both are at the top of my list of Nicholas Sparks.
I really loved this book, mainly because of the fact that it was something that was believable and happens in everyday life. It wasn't sugarcoated. I couldn't put the book down, it was definitely a page turner! Very easy read. One of my first Sparks' books and I plan on reading many more of his after this one.
As the title suggests, this is a story about love and heartbreak. John is like countless young men who rebel in their teens and go through early life with no direction, finally take a good look in the mirror and around them, and end up enlisting in the army where he at last grows up. On one of his leaves he meets Savannah and falls in love. Unfortunately Sept. 11 changes all their plans for a future together.
Sweet, bordering on sappy, touching and tender, with dialogue that is simple and heartfelt, I can see why Sparks connects with so many. I did enjoy this read, however the central love story was not what made me cry - it was the relationship of John and his father that for me had the most depth and meaning. The semi-tragic end was completely predictable, but Sparks manages (barely in some places) to handle it deftly without crossing the line into corny. I liked the way the characters developed and still stayed true to themselves, without the feel of being manipulated by the author. I picked this book up because it was on my desk when I had finished the book I was previously reading, and I'm glad I did, but I don't think I will go out of my way to read another of his books. However, I'm sure if another one falls in my lap it will be enjoyable as well.

As usual with Nicholas Sparks books, it made me cry. I think this is probably my favorite of his so far.
Not my favorite Sparks novel, but certainly not a bad read.
This story is typical Nicholas Sparks, including a surprise twist at the end.

Very touching story about love and loss.
Not my favorite Nicholas Sparks book but still very enjoyable to read.
My favorite sparks novel yet......i LOVED this book! I couldn't put it down!
This is a typical boy meets girl love story with current events like 9/11. It's a tragedy and even the prologue will tell you that it does not end well. It is from the view of the protagonist, John. Even though the army is a large part of his life, he only mentions it in general and talks about 9/11 and Iraq briefly. I enjoyed reading it but gave it 4 stars only because I'm sap for tragedies. It's a well polished story line but pretty typical.
Can't say I liked the ending, but we know life doesn't always have happy endings. Good book though, and clean!
This book is too sad for words.... I was so bummed out after reading it.
I was so drawn into this love story that I couldn't put the book down. Have a box of kleenex ready it's an emotional roller coaster. I would read another book by this author especially if more of John's life is revealed.
Great book. Gave excellent detail about the situations in which each character was in. Kind of a tear-jerker. Read several parts over and over just because they stick with you.
I did not really like this book and found the main character almost unlikeable until the very end of the book. I never understood why Savannah fell in love with John to begin with. As usual, the story is depressing and heartbreaking, but sorely missing the Sparks "spark" of romance.
Enjoyable read, somewhat moving/emotional. Not a lot of substance...fluffy.
A good read-and a "real life" lesson in love..and what love is all about.
This was a great love at first sight story. It really grasped the concept that when you meet 'the one', something inside of you just shifts as if the universe is trying to tell you not to mess this up. It had me tearing up, because things like this really do happen. How many people are in the service who are either in love already or fall in love while on leave, to then have to leave that person behind for the sake of their country? All your hopes and dreams are leaning on that love you have waiting back home, but you never know if it will last, because time and distance break the bond that seemed unbreakable. John and Savannah depicted the strength real life couples must have to sustain such strains, and in the end they depict how hard it is love someone you will never fully be with. GREAT READ! In the end, my heart hurt for John and Savannah.
Nicholas Sparks hasn't ventured outside his comfort zone in Dear John. Those who've read A Walk to November and The Notebook will find themselves in familiar territory with this tale of a reformed young rebel who falls in love with a fresh, kindhearted girl entirely outside his previous realm of experience. Formulaic? Yes, but I forgive him, mostly. John is a likable, straightforward narrator and, better yet, at the book's opening, he has already moved past the I'm-so-cool-cuz-I-don't-give-a-darn teenage immaturity that make A Walk to Remember slightly tedious in its early pages. Savannah is the kind of girl every mother hopes her son will bring home - genuine, selfless, mature yet innocent. Their falling in love is predictable, but nonetheless touching, and the best part of the book.
What follows is more uneven. John's relationship with his father is well depicted, but I found Spark's description of military life flat and bland, evoking none of the camaraderie John purportedly felt with his squad - a camaraderie supposedly strong enough to lead to the decision that puts his relationship with Savannah on the line. Perhaps it was an artistic decision to convey the usual monotony of military life first and foremost (in which case, mission accomplished) - especially in light of John's eagerness to return to Savannah - or perhaps it was simply weak writing. Sparks does put in a twist or two, but nothing is truly unexpected in his treatment of the love story; the reader can see the final resolution long before John figures it out.
Overall, a decent read, worth the few hours it'll take to finish, but it's nothing you can't live without.

Good book but not one of my favorite Sparks books.
I LOVED this book! I read it in 2 days! It wasn't your typical Nicholas Sparks novel, but I think that is what I loved most about it.
Nicholas Sparks is my favorite author and once again he didnt let me down!
While I normally like books of this type and by this author, I did not enjoy reading this book. I did learn a little about Asperger's Syndrome and felt honor-bound to finish it, but was left unsatisfied even at the end.
Good story of growing up and love. A nice light story made for a fast read.
Great story, very real characters, timely and I would recommend this book.
Nicholas Sparks has again authored a remarkable novel about "true love"!
This was a sweet, sweet love story in the typical Sparks style.
I read this book about 2 weeks ago and still just cannot decide if how it ended was how I hoped it would end... Regardless, the ending is rather heart-wrenching (typical of Nicholas Sparks books.) The first quarter of the book is a little slow, but once the 2 main characters get together, things pick up. The book has other typical Sparks elements like intense romance, yearning, declarations of love, soul mates, etc., but that's part of what makes it such a sweet, endearing romance story... The movie version of the book is coming out on Feb. 5, so I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's going to see the movie!
Explores the complexities of love-how it survives time and heartbreak, and how it transforms us forever.
Another great read in my opinion. I couldn't put it down and it was emotional especially at the end.
My third book from Nicholas Sparks...and I loved it, as usual! Starts out a little slow but I soon got to the point that I didn't want to put it down! Great love story...sad in parts...but great book all in all!
Loved this book, it is most defiantly my favorite book ever. Although it's very sad, it also shows the true meaning of love, which I truly value. A must read(preferably before you see the movie!!)
A beautiful, moving story.....it explores the complexities of love...how it survives time and heartbreak and transforms us forever....highly recommended.
My 13-year-old daughter really loved this book. Like many of his books, it was a little sad, but she enjoyed it nonetheless.
This was my second book I read by sparks, I loved it! Definitely one of my favorite books.
Another great book by Nicholas Sparks. Not your typical, expected ending.... But as it should be.
Loved this book. Especially if you are a Sparks fan.
I love Nicholas Sparks but was a little disappointed in this book. It was very predictable but also a nice love story.
My favorite Sparks book so far! Excellent story that I could NOT put down!
Always a good read... Typical Nicholas Sparks.
Got half way through the book and had to give it up. I knew where it was going and I didn't like how it was going to end.
"Dear John" The letter read. And with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives changed forever....
You won't be able to put this book down! An extraordinary story of love.
I still can't get over how well Nicholas Spark writes such detailed romance novels - he gets right down to the nitty gritty on a persons feelings. This was such a touching story and a very emotional one - the endings aren't what you think they might be in a romance novel, he ends them more like the movie 'Braveheart' in some respects. I just loved this book and was so moved at the end that I couldn't stop crying and did like the way he did end it, but would have rather had it a different way. Oh well - still a great book! :p
a moving love story that surives time and heatbreak---I loved this book
ANOTHER PAGE TURNER BY SPARKS!!
Very heartwarming. Sparks at his best.
When Savannah Lynn Curtis comes into his life, John Tyree knows he is ready to turn over a new leaf. An angry rebel, he had enlisted in the army after high school, not knowing what else to do. Then during a furlough, he meets the girl of his dreams. Savannah Lynn Curtis is attending college in North Carolina, working for Habitat for Humanity, and totally unprepared for the passionate attraction she feels for John. The attraction is mutual and quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah vowing to wait for John while he finishes his tour of duty, and John realizing that he's ready to settle down with the young woman who has captured his heart. Neither can foresee that 9/11 is about to change hte world and will force John to risk every home and dream that he's ever had. Like so many proud men and women, John must choose between love and country.
Worth reading.
GREAT READ,FINISHED IT IN A DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another good book by Sparks.
Another great romance from Nicholas Sparks.
I loved this book! It was so good, I couldn't put it down!
This book was a good book up until the end. The end really disappointed me.
Very moving & emotional book. Another great read from Nicholas Sparks.
This was a really good book. Although, I didn't completely agree with the way some of the things happened (obviously, I didn't write the book, lol). But all in all, this is now one of my new favorites!
Love Nicholas Sparks, I wish this book ended differently, but it still was good!
This book was an easy read. However, it is not a tear-jerker like many of NIcholas Spark's books. Its one of those books where the ending is satisfactory, but you kinda wish you could twist it to something else.
Another great Nicolas Sparks book! A store of what love really means.
loved this book - sad though
Great book. Am looking forward to seeing the movie. Nicholas Sparks is a wonderful writer.
I loved this book! While it was not a happy ending, I still loved it. It shows that true love is thinking whats best for that other person. There were sad moments. Lots of them. When you read this book, have a box of tissue nearby. Another great book from him. I just wish the movie would have a good ending. Im crossing my finger. :)
THIS BOOK IS AN AWESOME READ...SHORT BUT VERY TOUCHING WITH SOME VERY SAD (CRYING) PARTS. I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED READING THIS BOOK.
A predictable Nicholas Sparks read - not horrible, not amazing either. It's a nice, easy book that's great for escaping - just don't expect it to change your life or anything. I actually enjoyed the relationship between the main character and his father more than the romantic relationship. I wanted more of that.
If you really like Nicholas Sparks, you'll enjoy this book. If you find Sparks to be somewhat surfacey, predictable and somewhat dull - you won't be disappointed.

A wonderful love story. However, it isn't written well, and it's very predictable.
Awesome story! I loved it and can't wait to see the movie next month!
It was slow it the begining, but then it picked up; and turned out to be a really good book.
the book was a lot better. when in to more depth about the dad. movie was o.k.
I was very impressed with this book. I read it in one setting. I also cried through most of the book.
I believe that Nicholas Sparks is a very gifted author.

Another wonderful love story from Nicholas Sparks.
Though I usually like Nicholas Sparks' books, I did not like this one at all, the ending ruined the whole book. I hate books that end bad, its just depressing, like leaving a story without there being a resolution. If you don't like books that end bad I would not suggest reading this one. I do love Nicholas Sparks, I just wish this one would have ended better..
Aww this book was amazing. It was a very beautiful write and Nicholas Sparks keeps on charming me with his amazing stories, he has such a gift
Oddly enough, I think Nicholas Sparks's stories make better movies than books. The mundane details just don't do much for me as a reader. I just don't find enough depth in his books to keep me interested and this one was the same way. I was happy to see that the theatrical ending was slightly different than the book's, but I think this was not one of his better ones all the way around. There are much better stories out there so while Dear John is "ok" I certainly wouldn't recommend it.
Love this book...Nicholas sparks did it again..Wonderful romance story...I couldn't put it down...It captures you from the very first chapter!!
John Tyree lives alone with his father who seldom communicates. He rebels as a youth, runs with the wrong crowd, and is headed for a life of failure. He joins the army which grows him up and opens his eyes to responsibility. While on leave he falls in love with a girl studying special education who enables him to understand his estranged father. They vow to wait for each other, and then 9/11 happens. John makes a difficult decision, but when you love someone, you do what is best for that person, even when it hurts.
Nicholas Sparks has written another one that tears at your heartstrings. He "explores the complexities of love--how it survives time and heartbreak, and how it transforms us forever."

As always, love Nicholas Sparks. This book read a lot like the Notebook though, that was disappointed. Plus I didn't tear up, something I always do with one of his books. Still very enjoyable though
what I loved about this book, is it doesnt have the "typical happy ending" but it does end happily! just not the usual! very good , quick weekend read, which all his books seem to be since I cant put them down! love them all!
I loved this book. It was a quick and easy read and I found the story line and characters to be believable. The book was much much better than the movie.
The characters and their story is very believable. I liked how their story evolved; naturally and realisticaly given their circumstances.
This book was a very fast read and I could not put it down. I keep reading hoping that the ending would be different from the one that was unfolding.
Also, the ending was abosolute with no possible questions of "what if" or "maybe....".

I enjoyed this book. I liked the charactes and the story. It was a quick, easy read that I would recommend for anyone who likes a good love story.
I am usually not impressed with fairy tale love stories that Nicholas Sparks loves to write so much, but Dear John is so much more than just a simple love story. He writes about the difficulties of being away from home and joining the army, and a broken relationship between a father and his son, what to many of us is not just a fairy tale. This book hits close to home, and the plot is not just centered around a love story. It's so much more.
Another Sparks triumph. The way he conveys emotions so clearly really speaks to the reader directly. Be sure to have a box of tissues with you however to read this one!
OMG this book is simply AMAZING!!!! I loved every moment of it!!!! I didn't want it to end, and even though I absolutely HATED the ending, I knew that that was how the book was supposed to end. Seriously, one of the best Nicholas Sparks' books I've read!
Great book. Hard to put down. Gut wrenching sobs.
I couldn't put it down, read it in one night, just had to know how it ended. I hate to be a spoiler, but don't read if you like happy endings
Alright this was not my favorite book. I would suggest reading the book if you really wanna see the movie because it sucked, and the book sucked less. The book had a good story going but then it got near the end and turned crappy. The Ending in general was okay, it wasnt too bad, but it wasnt what I wanted and wasnt what I thought the main character deserved.
From Booklist
John Tyree is on the fast track to nowhere. At 20 he has no real relationship with his strange and dispassionate father, no attachments to anyone else, and no job, so after breaking up with his girlfriend, he decides to join the army. Military life does alter him, yet he remains disconnected. While home visiting his father in Wilmington, North Carolina, however, he meets Savannah Curtis, a college coed who is everything he is not. A warm, morally straight-ahead woman with a commitment to special education, she captures John's heart and he hers. In the short time they spend together, he opens up to Savannah and true love develops as they plan for a future. Then September 11 changes everything. John feels that it is his duty to renew his commitment to the army, while Savannah wants him home with her. The good soldier now lives in dread of receiving a "Dear John" letter. Sparks, a perennially popular novelist whose name is synonymous with romance and bittersweet endings and whose work translates so readily to movies, lives up to his reputation with his latest novel, a tribute to courageous and self-sacrificing soldiers. Enjoyed reading this book. Of course, since the name was Dear John, I expected it to be a tear jerker but it wasn't - just a couple of places that called for tissues.
Sparks lives up to his reputation...a tribute to courageous and self-sacrificing soldiers.
excellent!
Great book. Did not want to put it down - read in two days. It keeps you involved and interested the whole time. Does not lack for involvement. Loved it.
Another excellant Nicholas Sparks book. If you love Nicholas Sparks books, you enjoy this one.
I really liked this book. Love how it ends. Was told that if you like the book, you won't like the movie because they are different. So I am not going to see the movie.
Another Amazing book by Nicholas Sparks!
This is an excellent story, one I would recommend to anyone, male or female.
A bittersweet love story in true Nicholas Sparks style.
Was a little slow at the start - but once into the story I didn't want to stop!
Another one of Nicholas Sparks great stories! This story is about true love - sacrificing everything so the one you love is happy.
Really enjoyed this book. Great story! I would def recommend it.
One of his best. I loved the book! And when I read it now and then, its the same feeling as I felt when I first started reading it.
I'm not really a Nicholas Sparks fan, but I enjoyed this book. It was very touching and I was a little sad at the end.
Very easy read but good story. Sentimental as all of Nicolas Spark's books tend to be but I enjoyed it.
The trials and tribulations of a new couple with one in the Army.
Absolutely loved this book! Impossible to put down even during finals time!
Quick read,,held my interest
Nicholas Sparks is an excellent writer but "Dear John" doesn't belong in a church library and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Sex outside of marriage is wrong.
It is Nicholas Sparks...need I say more?
Great book
Another love story that touches the heart from Nicholas Sparks. ENjoyable.
I enjoyed this book. I'm always sad to finish Sparks books, they always take you on a nice journey
