This is the 6th installment of the Kim Stone series. There is discovered a suicide of Jeremy Roberts and Kim is forced to investigate with Tom Travis, DCI of West Mercia. Kim is not too happy about doing this investigation with Tom Travis but her boss insisted. Tom has been investigating a potential hate crime against Polish immigrant, Henryk Kowalski. Dead Souls is a story with racism at its core with excellent character development. The plot has a few stands that begin to merge as Kim is investigating. Jacob James has been held captive in 1989 and it is not explained but the reasoning behind it is quite obvious. If you like books with plots that merge then you will love this novel. I loved all the plot twists that came together and were quickly solved. Highly recommended!

When skeletal remains are uncovered in a field that is in two jurisdictions, D.I. Kim Stone hurries to the site only to be met by D.I. Tom Travis. Their bosses tell them they must work together on this investigation. Neither of them is happy about it. With little to go on, Kim and Tom work on the identity of the victims. The Forensic Specialist working the case shows them that one victim was shot, another seemed to have been ravaged by a pack of dogs. After questioning the landowner and the family that has rented the land for decades, both Kim and Tom believe they are not being told the whole story.

While Kim is busy, Bryant and Dawson are working on an assault/attempted murder case. When a similar case falls in their laps, they see a pattern of hate crimes in the past few weeks. With Bryant and Dawson busy, this leaves D.C. Stacey Woods working on her own. She decides to look into the apparent suicide of Justin Reynolds. He left a note for his mother saying he was sorry for what he did. Stacey is digging into his computer when she discovers something that puts her in jeopardy.

The sixth story in the D.I. Kim Stone series felt like we had a bunch of small cases that may tie together. Each chapter would switch to the next case. It got a little confusing for me to switch gears so quickly. The plot was twisty and the crimes were horrific. The last 100 pages of the book were fast moving and suspenseful. Loved it! My rating: 4.5 Stars.
