A sniper has been targeting the shape-shifting population of Bon Temps and the surrounding communities. As a new were-panther, Sookie's primary concern is for her brother Jason. But as it turns out, she's also a target, despite the fact that she's only a psychic, not a shifter.

This is the 5th book in Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire Mysteries, aka the Sookie Stackhouse books. I enjoyed coming back to this series after not having a chance to read them for the last year or so; it felt like revisiting an old friend. :D Fortunately, Ms. Harris is good at refreshing your memory about past characters and activities so the fact that I didn't have the earlier books here to review before picking this up was not a problem at all. She doesn't go overboard in describing past events, but it's enough to give you a feel for things if you haven't read them, or to bring everything back more clearly if you have.

Unlike Grave Sight, the first book in her newer Harper Connelly series, I was left uncertain all the way until the end of the book as to who the sniper was. And even then, she still managed to throw in an extra twist. I knew there's a good reason these books are part of my personal collection. :)

This book barely kept my attention. At this point in the series I would like to see more depth in character development and in the creation of Sookie's world. In my opinion, Harris is giving the series too light and fickle a touch-- a bit like Sookie herself, who lacks the ability to really know which man she likes best and why, but all she can say is that she's sexually attracted to all. I see that as a metaphor for the author's own inability to make up her mind which character she wants to keep or discard, so she writes them out - or nearly - because she lacks the skill or interest to develop them, and their relationship to Sookie, further.

I like Harris' humor. I want to keep on liking the series. I want to continue to care about Sookie and friends, but I'm bored. I'm losing interest in cardboard characters that Harris doesn't adequately build up and is very quick to tear down.

A very fast read & difficult to put down. More sexy vamps, Weres, shifters, and fairies to contend with, Sookie's life is definitely interesting. One of the best of the series.

Another delightful Southern vampire detective book with Sookie as the main (human) character. Sookie's brother is starting to turn into a werepanther and a sniper is killing the local changeling population. Sookie Stackhouse is the main character throughout this series. She's totally human and has the ability to read minds. She's a charming, well-developed character as are the minor and not so minor characters around her. This book is filled with plot twists and fascinating characters. There's even an erotic, sensual element when Sookie gets involved with one of the supernatural characters. It's a book with more than horror: black humor, charm, funny dialogue, and a well paced plot. I wanted to pick up another book with this series but have read them all. I finished the book wanting more.

Wow, Miss Sookie had her hands full in this one. I just love Eric and as the books continue he just gets better and better. Alcide has diminshed in his hunk status in my opinion now. As usual Miss Harris is a master at weaving this tale. Can't wait to start the next one.

Charlaine Harris does it again! The characters that she has created are wonderful and you have no trouble becoming addicted to her stories. This is one series that I can read again and again. She has a very unique way of writing because its like talking and listening to an old friend rather than reading a book. This book continues her ingenius story of Sookie Stackhouse and all the paranormal creatures that we have already seen and all the ones yet to come. I LOVE THIS SERIES, ITS CHARACTERS, AND THE PLOTS.

I've come to enjoy Harris' Sookie Stackhouse books. In the beginning, the writing style and the obvious playing to the stereotypes of Southerners kind of put me off, but I've found that the more of this series that I read, the more I like it.

This particular novel deals with the after-effects of Eric's amnesia...and with a new menace to the shifter population of Bon Temps. Sookie, as always, seems to find herself neck-deep in politics she doesn't understand and situations that she should have avoided..but comes out relatively unharmed (which is part of her charm).

I also like the fact that Harris doesn't really treat Sookie as a nymphomaniac paranormal person (aka Anita), but as a person that has developed feelings for the situations she is placed in.

All in all, a good installation of the series.

Oh, this one was just great! I stayed up way too late finishing it. It was more action-packed than usual. And now I am just really wondering who she will end up with - even I don't know who I want her to end up with... I missed her being with Eric... and it is too bad about the continued developments with Alcide... and there's always Sam... I just don't know what will happen! Especially with this mysterious Quinn coming to rise...

In this fifth entry in the famed Sookie Stackhouse novel, the plot becomes a bit hairy and lacks some of the cohesiveness that we've become used to from Ms. Harris. Still, this series' strength lies in its characters and by now, they are old friends. It's always wonderful to visit with the inhabitants of Bon Temps.

Maybe I need to spread these books out a little bit more, because all of a sudden they are blurring one right into the other. After putting this one down for a couple of days, I truly couldnt remember what it was about, I had to grab it out of the donation pile just to remind myself what the focus was.

If you have not read this series from the beginning, do not continue with this review, because there might be some spoilers. We know that Sookie is a waitress with a disability; she can read the minds of those around here, those that just happen to not be vampires. Therefore, when Alcide Herveaux asks Sookie to help read the minds of his were pack in hopes of helping his father become the next leader, she really has no choice. Well, of course she can do that, even if it is a strange ritual and parts of it just are not something that Sookie would ever like to know exists.

Then add in someone who is out trying to kill shape shifters and Sookies house is partially burned and Jason is still dealing with his own monthly difficulties and Tara is keeping vampires in her house and you have yet another week in the life of Sookie.

As I said before, maybe I need to spread these books out a bit more. They are starting to be the same story over and over with slight character changes in each installment. Skookie is a very likeable simpleminded character that always seems to get herself into one hot mess after another and needs to depend on her otherworldly friends to get her out.

I do not know what direction Charlene Harris will take these books, but the one thing that I do know, that kindly looking grandma sure has some hot blood running through her veins.

Another great installment in the series. I did somewhat predict the ending before it came, but I also didn't really care, with how much I enjoyed getting to that point. There are a whole host of new messes and complications introduced in this one, along with a few moments that come across as awkward or disappointing. Overall, however, it was just good and fast entertainment, and great fun to read. I know others already gave great and detailed reviews, so I'm not going to bother, and will just say that if you like the series you will enjoy this one as well.

Not the best in the series but good. Jason is not one of my favorite characters so to have a book that was basically based on him was not much fun for me but I love Calvin's character so it made it worth the read. Plus you can't resist Sookie's antics, she is hilarious and has great one liners.

LOVE this series. This one is quite a different twist - her brother becomes supernatural. As with the others in this series, there is some romance, some mystery, some humor, and a lot of fun overall.

There's enough twists to keep one interested, enough of the same to be familiar and comforting, and it's an easy enough read to be entertaining for those in the mood for some "fluff."

Yet another problem for Sookie to try and get out of, at the heart of all the paranormal and supernatural is the love triangle between Sookie, Bill and Eric. How to choose? Dark and sexy Bill, who despite everything seems to really love Sookie- or the blonde god, Eric who goes out of his way to give Sookie what she needs, or do both of them have ulterior motives? hmmm. Love these books. They are what my friend and I call, snack books- not deep literature, but sure are good reads.

Ok, so I watched True Blood on tv and had never heard of Charlaine Harris. I started this series out of boredom and read the whole series straight through in less than a week. Can't wait for the next one. All of the books are a tad repetitive on the character description (how many times do I have to hear about Sam's halo of strawberry blonde hair or Eric's Nordic good looks?) but very entertaining, light hearted and thoroughly addictive. You won't be sorry.

So far I have really enjoyed all the books in this series. As for this one (the 5th in the series) I wasn't as enthralled by it as I have been with the others. This one took me longer to finish. Of course it has a lot of action with a sniper on the loose, a house fire, and much more that I don't want to give away. So why the three stars? The main reason I love to read this series is Sookie Stackhouse herself. She is the perfect character and totally make the books what they are. She has spunk, southern hospitality, manners and a great sense of humor. I find myself laughing out loud many of times at things she would say. In this book though, I didn't find that as much. Sookie just wasn't the same. She was more pessimistic, grumpy and I did not find her funny at all. I know in this book she is going through a lot but the thing that I liked about Sookie is she never let it get her down. Still, if you liked this series I would still recommend this one. It has enough action to keep you entertained.

I've never watched the HBO series, and I don't plan on it anytime soon. I've loved the book series so much, the TV show is guaranteed to disappoint me.

The 1st book made me fall for Sookie and her men, and after I finished it, I immediately ordered every other book in the series. I just finished Dead in the Family (Book 9, I believe?) and I can't wait until Charlaine publishes her next one. I hope they go on for at least several more. I'm so involved in these books that when I finish one, I don't read anything else for days so I can just think about the one I've finished.

And I'm very much Team Eric.

I really love reading the "Sookie Stackhouse" novels and have really gotten into them. I think the characters are so different and just come to life when I read about them and I can see them right in front of me. It is awesome to have supernatual in these books and many people that do many different things. It really is a different world. There was a lot going on in this book with many different people but I think by the end it really worked out well. This is one series I plan on buying to read again and again. I think by reading again you miss other tidbits that you are able to put with other books. I have just really enjoyed these books....I even dream of them LOL. I really needed a change and this has given me a great change and a fun read. And then nothing beats getting to see them on True Blood even if they are not like the books. I just ::::swooon::: over Eric!

I have to say that the plots are becoming predictable. That's not to say that they're not exciting because they are. It's just that you can almost predict who will be the perpetrator by the first few chapters. I had this one pegged. Of course, it didn't have me put down the book. I still find the Southern Vampire Mysteries very fun, very exciting, and very much worth my time to read. I still love them, yes. If you are looking for a shocking twist at the end, you're not going to find it here because the formula is predictable. I am also a bit disappointed in the turn that Sookie's friendship with Alcide took. I don't think it's too much that the two of them could remain friends and get over their little crush from book three. Instead, the two of them are getting to the point where they can scant stand each the company of each other. I mean, Sookie can have a friend she's not making out with... right?

You can bet as soon as I can, I am going to pick up book six.

I've really been enjoying this series but this book was my least favorite so far. It felt like there was just a bit too much going on. Sookie has a little bit of involvement with all of these guys but none of it is going anywhere! There's a lot of stuff happening but it doesn't seem to push the story forward. I'm starting to feel frustrated with her like I do when I watched True Blood. I'd like to see her be more assertive! I'm definitely going to continue with the series but I hope the next book is more enjoyable.

Sookie Stackhouse is a cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's pretty and well mannered and has only a few close friends - which isn't surprising since not too many can appreciate Sookie's abilities as a mind reader. It's not a quality that has the guys beating down her door-unless they're vampires, werewolves, or other supernatural beings. When Sookie sees her brother Jason's eyes start to change, she knows he's about to turn into a were-panther for the first time-a transformation he embraces more readily than most shapeshifters she's known. But her concern for her brother becomes cold fear when a sniper sets his deadly sights on the local changeling population-and Jason's new panther brethren suspect he may be the shooter. Now Sookie has until the next full moon to find out who's behind the attacks-unless the killer decides to find her first.

Didn't care for this book because Charlaine Harris irritated me at the beginning when she:
1.Introduces a one eyed vampire pirate then on page 29, "he rolled his eyeS up..."
2. and then page 43 two new characters have looked for Sookie out at her house and then on the next page she gives them directions to her house.
Obviously her editor isn't paying attention to these irritating either.
Otherwise, I do like not having any idea where the story is going, so I have Harris 2 stars for unpredictability...but I only read these books, marking time until I can get my hands on a new Hamilton or Butcher book, which when finished makes me sad, verses these Sookie books: OK.

The story idea as a whole is good, however, the pieces that put it all together are definitely flawed.

On the whole, the book is a mediocre read. I'd say easy, but once again the author is horrible at keeping a story together. There tends to be a lot of gaps, like the story is being told by someone with ADD, and it leaves a reader flipping back pages to see if they might have missed a detail here or there. (don't worry, you probably didn't) In truth, I think the author figures out that we're supposed to be telepaths as well and know what Sookie is referring to at times.

And, until these books, I've never realized just how distracting a lot of misplaced and unnecessary commas can be... Does anyone proof read this stuff? Maybe someone should get the editor a calendar that shows them grammatical correctness every day.

I'm also really hoping that I'm not the only one to find the werewolf challenge an eye-roller. I'll never be able to watch another dog agility show on TV again without being reminded of that. It was just too ridiculous for words.

A person should be able to figure out quite early who the sniper is because the writer's technique throughout her books has a definite pattern. By the time the unveiling was done I found the confession to be pretty lame.

I've one more to go of the books that I have bought in this series, but I'm pretty sure I won't be wasting any money on buying them new again.

2005 instalment in the "southern vampire" series starring Sookie Stackhouse. Her brother has just for the first time undergone a transformation to a werepanther, and a sniper is picking off local shape-shifters

With this book I am beginning to see the Walmart pattern that other reviewers have referred to. I am also overly annoyed with the grammatical errors and the continuing theme of disaster vs. luck scenario. Sookie herself is growing weary of her apparent knack for getting into these situations so how are we, as the readers, not supposed to as well? I also have to mention how frustrating it is that each book introduces at least one new love interest into her life without removing a single one of the previous... how many options does one person really need and what it is it about this strange girl that attracts so many possible lovers when we are repeatedly told that noone was interested her earlier in life? This book was very disappointing, even more so than the previous books because it strayed very far from the synopsis on the back of the book (which summarized a very small portion of the entire story) and ended up being a lot of brief episodes that were rather unconnected and seemingly pointless. I did not see how most of this even fit into the big picture. At this point I am only continuing to read the books for my own curiosity of what the "end" might be and not because I am actually enjoying them.

I bought myself the boxed set of these books for Christmas and this was the last one I finished. The series is enjoyable just not enough to really keep me interested past this book.
