We are introduced to Viola Price and her family chapter by chapter. Her four grown children and their absent dad who has found a new family to look after. Each chapter is written in a different voice so we see the story from many angles.
Viola is lovingly human and knows how to get right to the heart of the matter when it comes to her kids and their mistakes, after all she muses, it's a mothers business. The families involved are torn apart by cheating spouses, sexual abuse, teenage pregnancy, and drug and alcohol addiction, just to name a few of the hurdles placed along your way through the story.

I think this book takes you through every emotion possible. One minute I found myself with a belly ache from laughing so hard, and dripping buckets of tears the next. The characters in this book seem as if they could be your neighbors and the journeys they embark upon are profound and redeeming.

A great family saga, thought provoking but also funny. This novel surprises the reader, but also enlightens as well.

A heartwarming and, eventually, uplifting story of one Black woman's family and her wise counsel. I enjoyed this book immensely.

Terry McMillian does a first class job of capturing the complex and dynamic tension of family relationships in A Day Late and a Dollar Short. The characters are powerful and real, and the theme of family dissension masking a hard-fought love is universal. McMillian is both a superb storyteller and a woman possessed of a clear musical magic with words.
