I should have read the first one in series before this one. Interesting series but hard to get into with the terms.

That's it! I'm done with this series. I tried to like it. I tried to get through the 5 books I prematurely bought before I'd read the first one. At this point I'm calling it quits. Life is too short and too hard to waste on books we don't like.

I really wanted to like this series. It has a fresh take on mythology, is obviously well researched, and the author is intelligent. It just somehow is so clinical. The story is too long. Too much of the characterization is told instead of shown. And there is an extensive cast of characters whose stories are intertwined with Nate's and Alexis' supposed romance. It's just such a battle to get through all these characters, most of whom I don't like and who just run around a lot and don't get anything done. Then they have sex because that's how magic works in this universe, but it is all so detached and the opposite of passionate that I just skim through them. Then our lovebirds are so awful together but because they share a "destiny" we are supposed to get behind their not-so-epic love. Plus Nate is such a d**che the entire time, that I can't fathom why Alexis would put up with him even if they are destined. (He wants her, he doesn't want her, he wants her, he doesn't want her because she's not his perfect fantasy woman, now he wants her again because she's interested in getting on with her life.) Since they are such a small part of the overall book, I could overlook their terrible characterization if the other good guys weren't too stupid to live. Seriously, how many times must a character burn a place down, screw up a mission, and have a temper tantrum before you just DON'T put him on a mission anymore????

I'm so done. I'm putting the rest of my unread books up for swapping.

Just to warn you...There's a spoiler in here.

Nate is full of crap. He can't accept that he wants Alexis and Alexis so is needy! UGH! She's all like 'I want to help the king. Must assist the king. Blah. Blah. Blah.' So annoying! Throughout the whole book, I just feel like jumping into the pages and slapping both of them! And Rabbit is so stupid sometimes! He just doesn't know how to stay out of trouble! I hope Jessica Andersen writes a book explaining Rabbit cuz the kid is cracked out! I still hate Anna. She is in severe denial of who she is. She has visions of her husband cheating and still stays with him!!! I want to slap her too!!!

Nate Blackhawk can't help but resent the demands of his bloodline. Unlike his fellow Nightkeepers, he isn't about to let the gods determine his destiny--especially when it comes to love. Which means he refuses to submit to the unquenchable desire he feels for Alexis Gray, the shockingly beautiful trainee who first appeared in his visions. But that's easier said than done, considering that Nate needs Alexis's help in uncovering the seven Mayan artifacts inscribed with clues on how to defeat the demons.

Alexis is willing to do whatever is necessary to prove herself as a Nightkeeper. She believes in the life she was born into and the future the gods have written for her--even when it comes to Nate, who seems intent on ignoring the intense passion between them. But as she and Nate test their powers in a race to recover the seven statuettes before the demons do, Alexis finds it impossible to deny her feelings for the one man who's destined to be hers.

After 177 pages I gave up. What I'm looking for in my romance reads are characters who have to overcome obstacles to be together, not characters who don't even like each other! I did not begin at the beginning with this series, so I was willing to admit some fault for all the lingo I needed to learn. The Mayan endtime piece was interesting, but start with book one if you're trying the series. There are multiple sets of couples here and only one of them is happy. There's enough angst in the real world; I want my escapist fantast reads to have happy people. I also got pulled out of the story every time the author used a random abbreviation, like convo for conversation.
