Reading this book was like being tortured. I kept thinking, "Surely the characters don't stay this stereotypical throughout the entire book." They did. "Surely the writing will get better." It didn't. "Surely there's a plot in here some where." There wasn't. The women are all perfectly perfect lesbians - beautiful, strong, talented, driven, etc. who absolutely hate anyone male. The men are all horrible people, rapists, bigots, stupid and mean. The women decide to sneak off earth and start their own oh-so-perfect women-only society. The women are so perfect they don't really need a government because there's never any real disagreements. Not only is this book boring, I found it to be insulting to lesbians, men, and women in general. Of course your opinion may differ from mine. Why not request it and find out. In fact, I consider this to be one of those books that is so bad you almost must read it as an example of bad. I think I have other (unread) books by this author in my library. I'm tempted to dig them out to see if they are any better.

I really enjoyed this book. It was first published in 1984 and even though it is set in the 22nd century I felt it reflected the politics of Feminism at the time. I just received the second book of the series and can't wait to read it.
