As much as I loved the first book, this one lost my attention about halfway through. Risa is given a task by Hunter to find who is killing off council members. But that only takes up a small portion of the book, and we are back to finding the "keys" again. In all honesty, the "key" storyline is where I am getting bored. I love Azriel, don't trust Lucien, and am just getting bored with the rest. This book could be considered an extention of the first one, instead of a new installment in the series. And yes, I realize that the hunt for the "keys" is the underlying theme for the series, at least for now. But it's not keeping my attention. I put this one down twice to read other books before picking it back up and forcing myself to finish it. And even though it didn't appeal to me this time, I will continue to read this series. I think Risa and her friends are worth the momentary "bored" speed bump. Risa is just as compelling a character as Riley Jensen, and worth sticking with it. Besides, I really want to find out what will happen between Azriel and Risa.

Definitely not as good as the first one but still an okay read. I think what saved me was Azriel's hunk factor.

There are a lot of redundant information if you read the first one. Usually it isn't a bad thing but it is just presented exactly the same as it was in the first book, word for word. I'm wondering if Arthur had intended Darkness Rising and Darkness Unbound to be one book but was told it was too long and to make it into two books. It really seemed like she had to put a lot of "filler" in order to extend the second book.

I really liked the idea of the aging, dying vampires and wished that plotline was developed more.

Lucien finally shows some of his true colors here. I found him somewhat creepy. Somehow Risa's relationship with him makes her look really dumb. In fact, she is really dense in this book but I was still rooting for her.

If you have skipped the first book, read it. This one is only worth it if you decide to continue on with the series.

Better. A significant improvement over the first book in the series, Darkness Rising brings Risa closer to Azriel and begins to perhaps shed light on the nefarious character of Lucien. Good enough to make me want to read the next book in the series.

Sex scenes were not as hot as the fist book, and all with the wrong lover, IMO. But she is building the foundation for a compelling love story, if not a love triangle.
