A scary story with a cunning psychopath who murders young girls very much like another girl was murdered 18 years ago. This book is a smooth mixture of the psychological thriller, the "woman in jeopardy", the whodunit, and the Police Procedural. With the first murder, Police Chief Nalen Storrow thought he left violence behind when he moved his family to Flowering Dogwood, Maine. The investigation into this girl's murder leads Storrow to believe the crime may have been committed by his own son, Billy.

Eighteen years later, Nalen Storrow's grown daughter who's also a cop, becomes obsessessed with this unsolved murder. Shortly after she opens the investigation, another young woman disappears. Billy becomes a suspect again. But their are others in town with long buried secrets. The staggering revelation that's revealed is surprising.

A good quick book to read whose suspense makes it one I'd recommend.

Read the book every chance I got until I finished it. You think you've figured out who the killer is (several times) & then when you get to the end, you find out you were wrong! Really keeps you guessing all the way through. Truly a horror story from begining to end.

This was a very creepy and intense read. I found very hard to put down.
A small town is once again confronted by a brutal murder-a copy of one frm 18 yrs ago. The police chief's son, Billy, was a suspect in the first murder, and once again in the second. Racheal, Billy's older sister, reopens the old case and soon takes a journey of suspicion, doubt, and fear. As she peers behind the town's facade, the more the mystery deepins.

I enjoyed her book The Breathtaker and read Darkness Peering immediately after. However, there's the same physically and emotionally abusive, alcohol related father-son generational relationship and dysfunctional family dynamic among main characters. Daughters, however, are cherished princesses in both books. The minor police characters are not well drawn. They jump to conclusions without having evidence. And I didn't find the book "terrifying" as the cover suggested.

18 years ago a young woman was brutally murdered ..... that crime has never been solved. The sheriff at the time had suspects .... one of them his own 16-year-old son. Rather than turn him in, he made an earth shattering decision.

Forward these last 18 years, the deceased sheriff's daughter is a detective, her brother working at the School for the Blind. Their father's decision so many years ago has made a profound difference in the lives of his children.

And then another woman is found dying after being brutally attacked. Another young teenager and her boyfriend go missing. Is there a connection to the first killing? It is up to Detective Rachel Storrow to decide .. and once again, her brother is a possible suspect.

I really liked this book. The characters are firmly fleshed out .. warts and all. Several twists and turns really keep you guessing until almost the very last page. I thought the ending was brilliant.

If you like mysteries, you're sure to like this one!

I really wanted to love this book but alas it didn't happen. The story was okay but I felt there were a lot of holes. The twists didn't shock me. I try to end my reading sessions at the end of a chapter. It didn't wind up happening with this book. I would fall asleep before I even ended the chapter. So the best thing about this book was that it helped me with my chronic insomnia.
