Astonishing reflection of how a small society could be so afraid of these murdering men that they would close they're eyes to the atrocities behind these murders. Shocking.

Very riveting true crime! Took a bit to get into it, but once there, it's
a book you don't want to put down! The more you read, the more you wonder how this could happen - but it did...

Tom Henderson is an excellent writer. An excellent read!

This is a good account of a double murder that went unsolved for 18 years because there were no bodies, no proof, just folklore that took on a life of it's own. What happened? Two young friends went on a hunting weekend that resulted in a crime so brutal that the âaccidental' witnesses were too frightened and intimidated to come forward. Until one policeman who took on the cold case â" wouldn't let it go until he had answers for the family.

If you are an avid reader of true crime you know that there are a variety of approaches an author may take in presenting the story of a true crime. The various ways of telling a story is one of the things that I like about reading true crime because there is never a pattern that is consistent. In Darker than Night, Tom Henderson takes the journalistic approach, and it happens to be one of my favorite ways to read about crime. In this book, two Michigan hunters leave for a annual hunting ritual but never return. Henderson describes well the frustration of the family as well as law enforcement when nothing they could do would generate any leads as to the whereabouts of these two men. Suspects were noted but there was not enough evidence to charge. The reader gets to know these two suspects very well, and Henderson presents their background and character so well that the reader despises them long before they are charged with the crime of killing the two hunters. There is surely no doubt that they are guilty, but for 18 years it appears that they have truly gottetn away with murder.

The chronology of the investigation, the dedication of the investigators, and the determination of the prosecutors is cleary the main selling point on this dramatic murder story. I found it compellilng. If you are one who does not like the tedium of trial minutia, you may not like this book as much as I did. The workings of our justice system, both the successes and failures is fascinating to me, so I give this book a good rating. I have read Henderson's other works as well, and find him to be a very thorough and competent researcher, and talented writer.

A very interesting account of a true double murder. For those of us who live in the area, it's exciting and appalling at the same time to recognize names and places in a book. There were some redundancies, but overall, it was very well written and it kept you on the edge of your seat, even knowing the outcome before reading it.

Well written true-crime story about a pair of Michigan hunters missing and feared dead and the 18 yr investigation into their death. Some geographical inaccuracies by the author were irritating to me (being from Michigan and familiar with the locales)but overall I enjoyed it.

This book is about people we don't want to think live close to us. A couple hunters take off for a week-end of fun and never return.

All Tom Henderson books are written well and interesting.I recommend him strongly for those who read the true crime genre.
This one was a little slower then some, but you really feel the fear of those afraid to to come forward either with what they knew , or to testify.
