Cheers for Darker Than Night
I loved this book. In Darker than Night, John Lutz has written an eminently readable thriller. This is a tightly woven web of plot line and character development leading to a surprising conclusion. Characters, including police, victims, and killer are all intelligently and realistically drawn, with just enough red herrings to keep the reader a bit off balance. Particularly interesting is Frank Quinn, the disgraced detective who is brought back to the department to track down a serial killer who is targeting and brutally murdering happily married couples. And the back story of the Night Prowler, himself, is intriguingly planted throughout the book, shading the edges and giving it depth. This thriller provides all the anticipated suspense, plus a bonus--truly well written prose. Thank you, Mr. Lutz, for an altogether excellent read.

I have read almost all of Lutz's books and the "Night" series is really some of his best. I think that it might make you concerned about going to sleep!! (especially women and married couples, in this book.)

One of my favorite authors .. and he never disappoints.

A killer dubbed "The Night Prowler" has turned the city that doesn't sleep into a town kept awake by terror. Unseen, he enters couples' homes. Unsuspected, he lingers until the perfect moment arrives. He leaves 'gifts' for his victims ... before taking their lives.

Excellent book. When I finished I immediately started looking to see if there was a sequel because I wanted to read more with these characters.

Frank Quinn is a disgraced former NYPD detective who was chased from the force with nothing except his pension. He molders in a decrepit Manhattan apartment. His ex-wife and daughter are gone. His reputation is broken, and his only comfort is from the bottle. Everything changes when he is approached by the upwardly mobile and very ambitious Harley Renz. Renz has an offerâfind The Night Prowler and get his job back, and maybe his reputation, too.

John Lutz combines police fiction with suspense, surprises, and entertaining characters in this book. Whereas there are a couple of different directions the storeline and plot takes, in the end, all is revealed. Just when you think you have it figured out, another surprise it thrown at you. While it is a large book (541 pgs), it went fast, as I found I didn't want to put it down.
