This book is the follow up to "Thicker than Water" and "Colder Than Ice". This one follows the police officer in both these books, Cassandra Jackson, as she tries to help a fellow officer piece together his life following a tragic accident that put him in a mental hospital.

I highly recommend this book.

A Really Good Story about the further lives of the survivors of the Mordecai Young debacle. The child "Sunny"'s name is now "Dawn" and she's nearly grown. Her Mom's name (Jewel) is now Beth and she's married to Josh. But the story is much more than about them; someone is trying to kill 'River' Corbett, an escapee from the state mental hospital and a former cop. 'Jax' Jackson, the possible new police chief is taking a big chance by hiding him in her new house.

Even though I hadn't read the two books before this one in this series of characters, I loved it. The characters are very likeable and developed well. Jax, a female detective follows her gut feelings and gets involved in a case that could break her chances at her dream job if it goes wrong. A great love story, mystery, ghost story all in one. I highly recommend this book.

In this romantic paranormal thriller, a man on the lam and a candidate for the local chief of police fall in love and face danger as they search for the truth of his wife's death The world believes that Michael "River" Corbett is insane and that he killed his wife. While he is locked up in a mental hospital, the steadily increasing doses of Haldol impede River's ability to think; however, he's fairly sure of two things: he didn't murder his wife, and someone else is trying to murder him. Managing to escape, he finds an unexpected ally in Cassandra "Jax" Jackson, a tough-minded police lieutenant.

I picked up this book, not having read any Maggie Shayne books before. Obviously I've been missing a treat. After I read it, I saw that two previous books deal with the same characters, but DARKER can easily be read on its own.
A good mystery/romance with a touch of paranormal. Some sneaking plotting, too.

From back cover: Michael "River" Corbett -- Confined in the state mental hospital and heavily drugged since the death of his wife, River cannot remember what truly happened the night he was arrested for her murder. But now someone is trying to kill him, and he is forced to run for his life. A fugitive from the law and from someone who wants him dead, all he wants is the truth. Cassandra "Jax" Jackson -- The uncompromising police lieutenant knows she's putting her career on the line when she encounters this desperate stranger and doesn't turn him in. Something in River's eyes has Jax convinced he's worth saving...whether he wants it or not. Dawn Jones -- The daughter of a madman, Jax's young friend is haunted by voices she doesn't want to hear. But she can no longer ignore the curse she inherited from her twisted father -- because unless she listens to what the dead are telling her, Jax might be doomed to join them.
