The "hero" (Wade) is an insufferable, manipulative, egotistical brute who uses blackmail and intimidation against Elissa. Wade's actions border on abusive and he could be termed a stalker. His actions in many scenes are prosecutable, and he would have been subject to being sued for sexual harassment, even by the mores of the time this was first published (1982). Maybe the author set herself a challenge, to see if she could make someone who acts like this loveable. Well, her heroine thinks so, but I do not.
