Normandy is a quiet lovely place for Lady Emily Hargreaves to relax and recover from the trauma of being shot and losing her child. However, she finds her husband's mother critical of her in many ways making the stay quite uncomfortable. When she finds the body of a young woman as she rides about the estate, she realizes that she is about to be involved in another murder mystery. Colin, her husband, is concerned about her fragile health and emotional state. She hears the cries of a child and sees a child in the dovecote which makes her question her emotional state. Those in the community tell a tale of a ghost child who searches for a mother to care for her. Is Emily losing her mind?

Add the delightful antics of Sebastion, a charming thief, who admires Lady Emily and moves precious artifacts from one household to another, and one has the makings of a delightful read. Who killed the lovely Edith and why? Was it her twin brother, the doctor who was treating her for melancholy or a total stranger? As the mystery unravels, the reader finds that the murderer is someone quite unexpected. I liked this tale very much.

I enjoy the entire series of Lady Emily books - it's fun following Emily's efforts to rise above the subservient position of even the most well-bred women in Victorian England, and revel in the use of her intelligence, imagination and determination.

I wasn't much impressed with this book, #5 in the series. I thought the first couple of entries were interesting, but I felt in this one that the author had run out of steam. Lady Emily's husband is so hopelessly perfect as to be a male Mary Sue, and the bit about the Colin/Emily/Sebastian triangle is too reminiscent of Elizabeth Peters's Amelia Peabody series. I should say that I did not read the entire book - read about 80 pages and then skipped to the end - so if it ever got more interesting, I wouldn't be aware of that.
