My five star ratings are very few, but this one was a must, as I told everyone, with whom I came in contact while reading it, how well this book is written. This book is a true story about the author's aunt. He had access to letters and journals and interviewed numerous survivors. The book does not read like a dissertation or history book, though, but is so well written that it could be fiction. Aunt Rosie is an amazing main character, she describes her and her friends as "a team of strong-willed, hardened optimists". They encounter the violence of numerous prison camps, but the story is never overdone and stands on its own, perhaps that is part of the reason. A very real chronicle of many people who lived through the occupation of Nazi troops.
I cannot say enough good about this book. The author has a story to tell and the capability to do the story justice.
I received this book in a goodreads contest, with the understanding of a fair and unbiased review.
