Sixteen year old Titus Bass plunges into the rough-and-tumble life along the banks of the Mississippi: a volatile, violent country of riverboatmen and river bandits, knife fights and indian raids, strong liquor and stronger women.

Great Book! As are all of his books. I recommend them all.

This is the actual start of the Titus Bass legend. As a sixteen year old from Tennessee, he leaves with just a stolen squirrel gun and the clothes on his back. Thus begins an eight volume saga of the early mountain men.
Titus Bass, leaves his little family homestead run by what he considers an overbearing father in search of what is down the road and over the next hill. He gains and education about life in 1810 Kentucky as he journeys on a flat boat down the Ohio River to New Orleans and walking back up the Natchez Trail to search for St. Louis and what is on the other side of the Mississippi River. Titus gets his first taste of independence, a woman, Indians, an earthquake, and many other of his "firsts" in this well researched Johnson page turner. Of the Titus Bass books written by T. Johnson this should be read first, hope you enjoy it as I did.
This is a great addition to the life of Titis Bass, I enjoyed the historic information
