I first listened to this book on audio cassette when I was separated with two young sons. It changed my life. Harriet Lerner uses anecdotes from her practice as a psychotherapist and incidents from her own experience as a married woman and mother of two to help listeners/readers understand the work that needs to be done in any relationship for closeness to be achieved. She has a way of relating that is personal, profound, sometimes humorous and always useful. Anyone and everyone will be benefit from this book and others by her!

Written by a PhD, it focuses on how to deal with those loved ones in our lives who may be sometimes troublesome, not just spouses, but family members too (think meddling mothers and alcoholic fathers). Many anecotes of actual people. Learn to establish boundaries and heal toxic relationships. Still a "modern" book with a modern message, despite it's publish date.

In The Dance of Intimacy, the bestselling author of The Dance of Anger outlines the steps to take so that good relationships can be strengthened and difficult ones can be healed. Taking a careful look at those relationships where intimacy is most challenged--by distance, intensity, or pain--she teaches us about the specific changes we can make to achieve a more solid sense of self and a more intimate connectedness with others. Combining clear advice with vivid case examples, Dr. Lerner offers us the most solid, helpful book on intimate relationships that both women and men may ever encounter.
