The author, a Lutheran minister and professor of theology, examines the biblical conception of churchgoing and contrasts it with the modern view of churchgoing. He states that it is entirely possible to be "damned through the church" when we try to make over the church in our own image. "We actually imperil our souls if we view the church as a man-centered organization indistinguishable from a social club."
