This is the first of the Kinsey Millhone books I've read, so my comments should be taken with that in mind. Grafton is touted for her 'offbeat humor' and 'tough but compassionate' style and I guess those phrases fit. Let me add my own phrase: "mystery lite". A few other authors come to mind in that sub-genre, particularly some of the works of Harlan Coben and Lawrence Block. Kinsey is a former cop turned private eye and in this tale at least she comes off as a bit of a diletante in spite of her spartan living conditions and old volkswagen sedan. In many respects she most closely resembles Block's Bernie Rhodenbarr character...especially in the way she's drawn deeper into the mystery in spite of both her inclinations and intentions. An okay read, but not one I'd return to until I've given up my preferred espresso for decaf.

Another book in the Kinsey Millhone series. She is a private detective who is hired to deliver a check to a fifteen year old. Turns out the retainer check is phony & when she tries to find the man who gave it to her, he's dead.

The client came to Kinsey Millhone with an easy job -- just deliver $25,000 to a fifteen-year-old kid. A little odd, and a little too easy, but Kinsey took Alvin Limardo's retainer check anyway. It turned out to be as phony as he was. In real life, his name was John Daggett, a chronic drunk with a record as long as your arm and a reputation for sleazy deals. But he wasn't just a deadbeat. By the time Kinsey caught up with him, he was a dead body -- with a whole host of people who were delighted to hear the news. But how do you make a stiff pay up what he owes you?

The author is one of the best authors of detective story writing today. Her heroine Kinsey Millhone, a private investigator is hired to deliver a $25,000 bank check to a 15 year old boy. When her retainer check bounces Kinsy sets out to find her client who she discovers is an ex-con, with two wives and a lot of people who wish him dead. when her client shows up dead the police think it is an accident but KInsey is not so sure.

Another stellar effort by Ms. Grafton. I'm reading them in order, so this was my fourth. I can't really say which one I like best at this point. They're all so consistently good. "D" is for Darn Good.

One of the things I like about this series is how direct they are - very evenly-paced, no big twists or surprises, just Kinsey moving along a path collecting more and more information until she has it solved. Grafton manages to work in a lot of details about Kinsey's personality without taking a lot of verbiage to do it; I remember being surprised about actions Kinsey takes in one of the later books but here is the rationale for that. I've seen complaints about how many scenes there are with Kinsey jogging or eating, but for me they are not distracting. Liked this one a lot, was glad Kinsey didn't get beat up again, but it is a sad ending.

4th book in the Kinsey Milhone series. This series is almost as comical as Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum.
In this book, the client hires Kinsey to deliver $25,000 to a fifteen-year-old kid. A little odd, and a little too easy, but Kinsey took Alvin Limardo's retainer check abyway. It turned out to be as phony as he was. In real life his name was John Daggett, a chronic drunk with a record as long as your arm and a reputation for sleazy deals. But he wasn't just a deadbeat. By the time kinsey caught up with him, he was a dead body with a whole host of people who were delighted to hear the news. But how do you make a stiff pay up what he owes you?

Kinsey Millhone is one of the most persuasive of the new female operatives... She's refreshingly free from gender and genre clichés. Grafton, who is a witty writer, has also given her sleuth a nice sense of humor-and a set of wonder woman sheets to prove it. (Boston Herald)
