The publishers of this book like to compare it to Caleb Carr's The Alienist......that is pushing it a bit. Yes, the timeframe is 1906 New York City and the plot involves young women being murdered, but the similarity ends there. This was slow moving and I had to force myself to finish it. It finally picked up a bit at the end but by then it was too late.

Most mysteries get at best four stars from me but occasionally one merits five stars. Others may disagree but this one is soo good I just had to give it five stars. The author's research into murderers and their methods make this one fascinating. I read long into the night to finish it. It's so well done that I cannot help but recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries. And, this is the third I've read by this author. I liked it. It was awesome! Marvelous! Outstanding!

I did not enjoy this novel as much as Pinkoff's first book, "In the Shadow of Gotham." In this second novel, Detective Ziele seems to have grown more obtuse with experience. I doubt I'll read another book in this series.
