In this novel, Foster begins the story of the Human-Thranx Commonwealth, the background against which are set his extremely popular novels:
THE TAR-AIYM KRANG
BLOOHYPE
ORPHAN STAR
THE END OF THE MATTER

Before Man and the insectlike Thranx had become alliens, when the reptillian AAnn were just occasional raiders of Thranx colony worlds, one young Thranx agricultural expert lived a life of quiet desperation. A dreamer in a world of sensible, stable beings, Ryo buried himself in his work, reclaiming marshland from a tenacious jungle -- until he came across a letter describing a relative's encounter with horrid, two-legged, soft-skinned space-going beasts...
A great sci fiction book about the start of friendship between different races.

This is part of a wonderful trilogy about how humans and Thranx first encountered each other, came to understand one another, and eventually began to walk a path that led to combining their governments.
What makes it more interesting is that it focuses on the efforts of individual humans and Thranx who had to help each other, sometimes in opposition to their own governments.
I sometimes just take one of these novels down off the shelf to read, or even skim through it, just to experience the delight I felt when reading them the first time.

I really enjoyed this story. Told from the alien point of view, it brings you into the alien's way of life. Foster did an excellent job, truly good entertainment. Don't pass this one up.
Great first contact story. Told from the Thranx point of view.
