Crying Wind claimed to be a Kickapoo author, who published the book "Crying Wind" (1978, London, Scripture Union). (1977, Moody Press). In 1997, her publisher, Moody Press, investigated the author's claims of having grown up on a reservation, and withdrew her best-selling books from the market. The publisher revealed that her real name was Linda Davison Stafford, a 1961 graduate of a middle-class white high school in Woodland Park, Colorado. Her uncle Paul Hamlet confirmed that the family had no Native American ancestry, and did not use Native American names or dress.

The author, artist, and speaker wrote Crying Wind, My Searching Heart, When the Stars Danced and Thunder in Our Hearts, Lightning in Our Veins. She has written short stories and travels the world visiting her children and grandchildren.
