On Sept. 14, 1517, Mara atteds mass at the Kilnoboy Church fufilling another of her duties as Brehon of the Burren. In this church one can find a piece of the original cross, a treasured religious relic. Because of the relic thec hurch brims with the faithful both near and far. Indeed, pilgrims travel from all=across Europe.

When the tower in which the relic is housed begins to burn and a naked man is found spreadeagled on a grave nearby, Mara finds herself embroiled in a search to find answers as to who set the fire and why and who murdered the man and why. The man's body is arranged to symbolize the manner in lwhich Christ died, incidicating that the deed may have been reliously committed.

Mara and her law school pupils work hard serching for the answers and realize that the situation is for more complex than they first believed. With so many pilgrims and religious representatives about uncovering the culprit or culprits is difficult. The climax involves both Mara and her young son who must escape death through another fire.

It's a well written tale that is quickly read. The truth is quite differen from what this reader expected. I did, however, feel that the story was laden with unneeded detail and action.
