In a sprawling mansion in the English countryside, the extremely affluent but extremely elderly owner lies dead on the floor of suspected barbiturate poisoning. An accident? Not likely when suspicion has already fallen on Aristide Leonides' luscious but grieving widow who is fifty years his junior and set to inherit his sizable fortune. It is also rumored that the lovely Widow Leonides is having an affair with the strapping young tutor who just happens to live on the family's estate. But Criminologist Charles Howard has his doubts about the entire Leonides' clan. He knows them intimately and also knows that in a household as shaky as Three Gables, nobody is on the level.

I really enjoyed this book very much. I had actually never read it before but it was a very quick and absorbing read. I give this book an A!

I think this is one of Ms Christie's best mysteries. The obvious killer of the wealthy 85 year old man is his young wife, no the grandchildren's tutor, no the eldest son, no the younger son, or maybe the sister-in-law?...and so it goes. There are so many suspects and they all live in the same house as the dead man, all had motives, all had easy access to the man and the murder weapon. This is not a Miss Marple or Poirot mystery either, but an ordinary young man in love with the dead man's granddaughter who tries to solve the murder so that she will feel free to marry him if the murderer was not a blood relative. The young man's father just happens to be the Scotland Yard man on the case and he asks his son to use his "inside" edge with the family to find the killer. The ending will astound you.

One of my favorite Agatha Christie stories -- where her awesome talent for misdirection, ancillary crimes and a strong and realistic knowledge of human nature makes this an excellent story.

A large familu living under the eye and protection of Aristide Leonides, is thrown into turmoil when the patriarch dies under mysterious circumstances. The whole family falls under suspicion.

This mystery was particularly fascinating to me because of the character studies. Agatha C. always has great characterization but this was even more so.
